The 91st Academy Awards, a.k.a. The Oscars, just came to a close, with Green Book taking home best picture, and Rami Malek and Olivia Colman winning best acting awards for their respective performances in Bohemian Rhapsody and The Favourite. This year’s ceremony took place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, and as always, all eyes were on the red carpet as top actors and actresses made their grand arrival, each dressed in the most glamorous attire in the effort of showcasing their star power and, of course, their unique fashion sense. Unfortunately though, we felt that this year’s red carpet seemed to consist of more misses than hits. Nevertheless, there were still a few standout looks and trends that caught our eyes — scroll down to see some of the looks that graced the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards.
Pretty in Pink
Whether in fuchsia, flamingo or bubble gum — pink was officially the most popular hue on this year’s red carpet, and many actresses dove right in to embrace its most vibrant shades for eye-catching looks. Our favourite was Gemma Chan’s show-stopping Valentino SS19 haute couture gown in neon pink, featuring a standout ruffled neckline, topped with a voluminous body with ruched pleats falling down into a long train.
Figure-hugging metallic gowns have always been a favourite amongst actresses, but Jennifer Lopez‘s glittering gown by Tom Ford was anything but expected. It showed off her hourglass figure beautifully with its form-fitting, high neck, long sleeved design, topped with mosaic details to reflect light from every direction. Brie Larson was also looking absolutely stunning in a sequin dress by Celine, featuring a sleek and almost futuristic cut that warped and draped down her body effortlessly.
The gents pulled out all the stops too, with Chris Evans and Michael B. Jordan (and Jason Momoa, see below) donning lush velvet tuxedos. Henry Golding, meanwhile, looked extra suave in a custom Ralph Lauren Purple Label tuxedo, adding fuel to heated rumours of his possibly being the next James Bond.
Hollywood couples also heated up the red carpet as they took the spotlight hand-in-hand, with Rami Malek (who won best actor as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody) and Lucy Boynton looking impeccably sharp in a Saint Laurent suit and a velvet off-shoulder gown. Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet, on the other hand, both chose to wear Fendi as a tribute to the legendary Karl Lagerfeld, who recently passed away in Paris at the age of 85.
