We’ve mentioned over and over how the humble and everyday denim has stepped up to become one of the best fashion investments in recent years, all thanks to its runway upgrade by luxury fashion houses from Celine to Chanel and Balenciaga. With Pantone recently announcing the ‘Classic Blue’ hue as its 2020 Colour of the Year, it gives us all the more reason to really have fun and play with the endless styling possibilities of this timeless classic.

Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year is ‘Classic Blue’, which gives us all the more the reason to embrace the denim pieces that have been populating the runways every season.

Last season, brands including Chloé, Gucci and Dior took the denim-on-denim route; giving the blue textile all sorts of design makeovers including patchwork, pleats and many more for that statement-making flair. For the Spring/Summer 2020 season, however, brands have decided to keep it simple and classic, leaving us room to mix and match them into outfits that truly represent our individual style.

We’ve broken down a few styling examples from the SS20 runways that really caught our eyes, so you can get ahead and start off the year in perfect colour and style.

Modern elegance

Channel modern elegance as seen at Stella McCartney by opting for a sleek and slender attire, which features a midi denim shirt with a simple front slit and a longline blazer. Keep the rest of the outfit minimal and light for an easy, breezy sophistication.

Get the look: Rejina Pyo Astrid patchwork denim skirt (HK$5,500) / Cushnie cropped off-the-shoulder lace-trimmed crepe top (approx. HK$13,224) / Munthe ‘Dietes’ checked woven blazer (HK$2,440) / Prada mesh and satin pouch (HK$8,500) / Cult Gaia ‘Soleil’ leather sandals (HK$3,070)

Seventies vibes

Hedi Slimane really leaned into the Seventies at Celine with a series of casual but elegant and tailored denim pieces. Opt for a pair of boot-cut jeans and wear it with denim shirts and blazer in a similar hue, before finishing with a pair of simple sneakers and metal framed sunglasses for a cool, urban appeal.

Get the look: Loewe high-rise jeans (HK$5,350) / Current/Elliott ‘The Deck’ denim shirt (HK$1,777) / Theory single breasted blazer (HK$3,731) / Golden Goose ‘Superstar’ leather sneakers with lettering (HK$4,590) / The Row x Oliver Peoples ‘Hightree’ round-frame gold-tone sunglasses (HK$3,535)

French girl chic

At Chanel, Virginie Viard celebrated the French girl chic with her SS20 collection, which was showcased at a make-believe Parisian rooftop. Go for the tomboyish bermuda shorts and match them with a simple printed sweater and denim jacket, as seen above, then elevate the look with a belt and a pair of Mary Janes.

Get the look: Loewe high-rise wide-leg denim shorts (HK$4,950) / Prada intarsia cashmere turtleneck sweater (HK$9,350) / Chanel lambskin chain belt (HK$8,100) / Chanel patent and calfskin pumps (HK$7,600) / Stella McCartney ombré denim jacket (HK$12,600)
