In this monthly series, the editors of Lifestyle Asia dive deep into the closets of Hong Kong’s best-dressed individuals. From statement footwear to indispensable wardrobe basics, these Style Heroes share some of their favourite pieces with us and, in the process, give glimmers of insight into what defines their personal style. This April, we speak with Inggrad Shek.

In today’s world of fashion where most need to flaunt their gleaming name-brand graduation certificates from either Central Saint Martins or Parsons School of Design in the hopes of simply passing through the door, Inggrad Shek (@inggradstyle) definitely stands out from the rest.

Born, raised and educated in Hong Kong, the now-established fashion stylist, art director and founder of Crush Association is a homebred talent through and through. Graduated from Hong Kong’s Caritas Bianchi College of Careers, Shek began her journey as a makeup artist, but soon found her calling in fashion as she participated in styling jobs for movies by Hong Kong filmmaker duo, the Pang brothers. It didn’t take long for her talent to be recognised, too. In 2010, she became the crown winner of the first edition of Hong Kong’s Fashion World Talent Awards (FWTA), which opened the doors for her fashion styling career.

Highlights of her achievements thereafter include her appointment as fashion editor of Taiwan’s Zine magazine in 2015, and the style director of Emperor Entertainment Group in 2017. She was also the appointed stylist for celebrities such as Eason Chan and Kay Tse, amongst others. But of course, the most important highlight of all would have to be the establishment of her own creative studio, Crush Association, through which, together with her team of fashion creatives, she has built an impressive portfolio of art direction, production and styling work from magazine editorials (both local and international, including Vogue Italia) to commercials, movie productions, music albums and many more.

What about her personal style, we hear you ask? Shek is definitely all about bold and daring styles, that’s because she believes fashion is a matter of self-assurance — she certainly comes across as ‘fearless’ when it comes to self-expression through her fashion choices. We caught up with Shek and asked her to recommend 10 must-have pieces for the Spring/Summer 2020 season. Click ahead for her picks.
