“There is no roadmap to style” Iris Apfel once said. “It’s about self-expression and, above all, attitude”.

The 95-year-old should know better than anyone, having inspired countless people over the decades with her unapologetic, completely original, one-of-a-kind approach to personal style, which is why we’re so excited that this living legend is making a visit to our city very soon. Next month, as part of Landmark‘s ‘A Year of Wisdom’ campaign, Hong Kong’s fashion fanatics will have the chance to meet Apfel in person and hear about her idiosyncratic philosophy on fashion and life, in her own words.

On 11 May, the style queen will share her secrets on how to live well through personal style at a forum hosted at Landmark Atrium (register for a spot here). Apfel will be joined by a panel of top Hong Kong and Chinese fashion designers and artists to discuss their creative views on originality, attitude, and expressions of style.

In addition, a special exhibition and store will be open in the atrium from 12–21 May, which will showcase a collection of pieces from Apfel’s personal archive that best represent her unique self-expression. Never seen without a pair of her iconic spectacles, Apfel has collaborated with Landmark to produce a pair of glasses to be sold at the exhibition, alongside a selection of exciting accessories made in collaboration with young local designers.

Apfel shot to widespread fame in 2005, after an exhibition dedicated to her fashion collection opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. Since then, she’s been named on countless ‘best dressed’ lists and starred in numerous fashion campaigns. She gained even more attention as the subject of Alfred Maysles’ 2015 documentary, Iris, and she was also the inspiration for a series of window decorations at legendary department store Bergdorf Goodman.

By mixing glamour and fashion with humour and whimsy, Apfel’s eclectic and almost theatrical style has become instantly recognisable and widely celebrated, and she’s managed to seem accessible to a large audience around the world. Above all, she’s living proof that having a great sense of style has nothing to do with age and everything to do with personality.

As we look forward to welcoming Apfel in Hong Kong next month, we’ve put together a list of our five favourite quotations from the legend herself. Make sure to write these down somewhere — or, better yet, commit them to memory.
