From pragmatic footwear for the gym to one of the hottest pieces on the runway — the status and popularity of sneakers has risen exponentially in recent years. At the same time, the resale market has also amped up, so much so that some say the right pair of kicks could be a better investment than gold. Well, they’re not wrong.
Fashion etailer Farfetch just conducted an extensive study to identify the world’s most valuable sneakers in the world. Research involved looking at some of the most expensive sneakers currently on the market, along with those that have skyrocketed in value since their retail debut.
So which kicks came out on top? Ranking No. 1 were the Jasper sneakers, which were originally designed by Kanye West 10 years ago in a collaboration with Louis Vuitton. These kicks were originally released in three colours, with a retail value of HK$8,439 back in 2009. Ten years later, the value of the sneakers has shot up 2,532 percent, now valued at a whopping HK$222,340. The most coveted iteration is the patchwork grey and pink version, as seen above.
Ranking second place are the self-lacing Nike Air Mag sneakers, which are famed for being an exact reference to those worn by Marty McFly in the 1989 movie Back to the Future II. Debuted in 2011 with a limited amount of only 1,500 pairs, these trainers once cost HK$22,231 but are now valued at HK$111,165 — a 500 percent increase from the original price. Coming in at third place are the Chanel x Pharrell x adidas NMD Hu trainers, which were launched in a partnership between adidas, Chanel and Colette. These shoes were created as part of Pharrell Williams‘ NMD Hu line, with only a limited quantity of 500 pairs released. Originally priced at HK$8,674, these kicks now sell on the market for HK$103,722, representing a 1,106 percent increase in value.
