It’s been a year since Burberry made its surprising decision to breakaway from the traditional fashion calendar and, instead, merge menswear and womenswear fashion shows into one dual-gender runway presentation, featuring highlighted pieces that are immediately available to shop. With London Fashion Week on its way, Burberry is about to debut its latest collection on 16 September (17th September for all of us in Hong Kong), at its brand-new show venue at the 18th-century Old Sessions House in Clerkenwell, London.
As the show date approaches, the brand has teased us with a number of photos on their official Instagram account, offering a first glimpse inside the new space, which includes exposed wall, chandeliers and plastic chairs. There are also photos of the collection itself, presented through campaign images shot by British photographer Alasdair McLellan. From what we can tell, there will no doubt be a lot of Burberry’s signature checks, which are to be reimagined for the modern day with contemporary materials and cuts.
Another thing to note: Apart from shooting the campaign images for Burberry, McLellan is also the co-curator of Here We Are — a public photography exhibition that will inhabit the Old Sessions House after the show. The exhibition, which runs from 18 September through 1 October 2017, will bring together the works of over 30 celebrated social and documentary photographers — including Shirley Baker, Ken Russell and, of course, Alasdair McLellan — all of whom made their mark in the 20th century.
Through these photographs, Christopher Bailey hopes to guide us through an exploration of the British way of life. “When we started thinking about curating Here We Are, I knew I wanted it to celebrate a certain strand of British photography that I have always loved — one which documents the many and varied tribes and clans and classes that make up this island of ours,” he explained in one of the posts on Burberry’s Instagram account. “It has been an extraordinary privilege to gather together this collection of photographs, that have influenced me so much over the years. They provide a portrait of British life, in all its nuances, both exceptional and mundane, beautiful and harsh. It’s the spirit of those photographs — sometimes ironic, sometimes tender, always truthful — that has guided our September collection. Together they will form an exhibition in our new show space, celebrating a very British way of life and way of dressing.”
Burberry’s third see-now-buy-now fashion show starts at 7pm on 16 September 2017 in London (2am on 17 September in Hong Kong). Watch the show here with us as we bring you its livestream, which you can find below.
