Simple and refined, the camellia has been historically appreciated throughout history for its elegant aesthetics and herbal qualities, but it is arguably even more widely known for its association with Gabrielle Chanel, who was absolutely fascinated by the flower for its simplicity and perfect symmetry. Not only would she frequently wear a camellia brooch against her black attires, she would also surround herself with the motif through her designs from brand packaging to bags, clothing, shoes and jewellery, and even furniture such as the Coromandel screens and chandelier in her apartment and shop at 31 Rue Chambon in Paris. This year, the house of Chanel once again pays tribute to its founder’s favourite flower by introducing a high jewellery collection dedicated entirely to the elegant bloom.
As Mademoiselle Chanel once said, “My (jewels) are flexible and detachable […] You can take apart the jewellery and use it to match a hat or fur. In this way, the set of jewellery is no longer an immutable object. Life transforms it and bends it to its needs.” The 50 -piece collection, titled 1.5 1 Camellia. 5 Allures, is highlighted by its transformability, with almost half of the jewellery creations designed to be detached and worn according to your personality and styling needs. The Rouge Incandescent necklace, for example, can be worn in five different ways. It’s comprised of nine strands of diamonds (totalling 73.2 carats) adorned with a stunning ruby-set camellia, which can be detached to reveal another openwork camellia, and worn as a brooch.
Other than its transformable design, pieces within the 1.5 collection are also noticeably more youthful, featuring the use of unconventional materials (such as rock crystal) and even trendier styles including asymmetrical and mis-matched designs such as the dangle ear cuff and stud combination. Our favourite piece from the collection is the Contraste Blanc necklace in white gold, cultured pearls and diamonds. It features an effortlessly stylish asymmetric design that is beautifully adorned with a detachable diamond-set camellia motif, which can be taken apart to reveal another openwork camellia motif. Apart from wearable jewels from bracelets, earrings, necklaces, timepieces and brooches, we’re also in love with the treasure box within the collection, which features a truly one-of-a-kind design that is exquisitely made from white gold, mother of pearl, watermelon tourmaline and pearls.
