New watch alert: the Cartier Maillon de Cartier

The Maison’s latest collection is a brand new entry in the haute joaillerie canon: featuring a sinuous original bracelet design, five variations and a price tag starting at HK$189,000.

Ahead of this year’s online-only edition of Watches & Wonders (successor show to the Geneva-based SIHH), Cartier has begun teasing just one of what promises to be many new releases for 2020. The caveat? This is a whole ‘nother collection itself. It’s called the Maillon de Cartier and, in classic Cartier form, the design language for the new models is bold, sophisticated and just plain pleasing.

Speaking in purely euphemistic terms, there’s a hint of the Juste un Clou collection about the Maillon de Cartier (it’s an object that is better described as ‘time-telling jewellery’ rather than bejewelled horology). The collection derives its name from the French for ‘link’, a not-so-subtle allusion to the crucial role the bracelet plays in the Maillon de Cartier’s overarching look and feel.

Measuring 16mm x 17mm, the Maillon dial is itself blended into the bracelet architecture — a series of twisting, arching links which recall the semi-circular shape of pure jewellery designs from Cartier. Come launch time, there will be five versions: two in white gold, two in pink and the ‘entry-level’ in yellow. Both the white and pink gold versions are available with either diamond bezels or a full pavé setting. 

Currently, all of the images of the collection we have are from the Cartier press kit but you already get a sense of the visual heft that’s going to be essential to this design’s popularity. The brand has made no bones about the simplistic timekeeping element — a time-only quartz movement — but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was only a trivial concern for the Maillon’s target audience.
