Ever since her runway debut for Raf Simons’ Calvin Klein 205W39NYC collection, Kaia Gerber, the daughter of supermodel Cindy Crawford, has already graced the runways and campaigns of some of the world’s biggest fashion power houses: Chanel, Prada, Fendi, Versace and Saint Laurent, amongst others.

While all this attention might be entirely too intimidating for most teens — she’s only 16 years old — it’s safe to say that Gerber was born for the limelight, because fashion’s model of the moment has already made another major career move by following in her mother’s footsteps as the latest brand ambassador for Omega. Her first assignment? Being the muse and face of Omega’s latest Trésor watch collection. We had the chance to catch up with Gerber for a chat at Omega’s launch of the new collection in Berlin earlier this year, so read on for our full interview in which she tells us her plans for the new ambassador role, how she manages her time and what watches mean for her generation.

Congratulations on your new role as Omega's brand ambassador. How does it feel to finally join your mother as an official member of the Omega family?

I grew up with the Omega family through my family and to make it official now is just such an honour to me. My mom has obviously had a lot more time with Omega than I have, but just through seeing how the brand was with my family and how we all got really close and I grew up all around these people, I’ve always felt super comfortable around them. Now it’s just in a bigger way.

Your mom has been an ambassador for Omega for over 20 years, which means you've known the brand all your life; what's your first memory of Omega growing up?

Going to the Beijing Olympics with my family and spending that time with Omega getting to know them as a family as well — that’s one of my favourite trips I’ve ever been on. I also remember there was one trip my mom and I did with Omega and Orbis, when we went to Peru and where we got to see the Flying Eye Hospital. I think I was about 13. It was just such an incredible experience seeing how Omega used their platform to help other people. That really changed my life and made me realise what I wanted to do.

As an ambassador, how do you plan on delivering the message of the brand to your generation?

With Omega you always know it’s going to be quality and timeless and they just have the best styles, so I think showing people from my generation that a watch can be a piece which is timeless and showing them the importance of a watch, not necessarily to tell the time, but the way it should make you feel and its quality.

You're actually right, because right now the smartphone does everything for you, and that includes telling the time, so what do you think a watch represents these days?

Today, you don’t need a watch to tell the time, everyone has a phone, but I think that’s why a watch is so important to me because it’s become a classic piece and you’re looking at it in a different way, as an accessory and something that makes you feel good. If you see someone in a watch, you know they really like that watch.

What type of watch design appeals to you?

I would say classic but with a bit of edge. Right now my favourite watch is the Trésor, because I think it represents my style really well. You can wear it with anything and a big part of my generation is mixing luxury with a more casual style, which I think you can do really well with the Trésor. It’s like putting on a certain perfume, it depends on what you want to express that day.

You're known for your very cool style. How do you make your fashion choices?

I follow the rule of less is more. I’m a bit of a tomboy, always have been growing up. I have an older brother so I would steal his clothes all the time and dress up like him, so I think it’s just very relaxed and simple.

Your mother is obviously a role model for women around the world, have you ever felt pressured into following her footsteps?

Everyone would ask me what’s it like to have Cindy Crawford as your mom, but the supermodel version of Cindy Crawford wasn’t my mom, she did a really good job of separating her work and home life and I admire that the most about her.

I have always looked up to my mom, not because of what she did, but because of who she was as a person. She always just led by example. So, just taking that from her and seeing how kindly she treats people and how professional she is, really inspires me to be the same way.

Is that also why you've decided to be a model just like her? What do you love most about this job?

Modeling is a dream job for me. I think it’s really cool because you get to travel and to meet people from all around the world that you wouldn’t normally get to meet, that part of it makes it really fun and exciting for me. I grew up in a small town near LA where it’s the same 20 kids from when you’re 3 years old to being an adult, so I love meeting people from all around the world and experiencing things you wouldn’t normally get to.

But you're only 16 years old, have you ever thought about what you might want to do after modeling?

I don’t know. I mean I think most 16 year olds don’t know what they’re going to do with their life. I’ve always been very open to try new things, so I guess we’ll see what happens, but as long as I’m enjoying what I’m doing in the moment then I’ll just continue to roll with it and see where it takes me.

I still live my everyday life like a normal teenager. I’ve always had an old soul, but I don’t do anything out of the ordinary, like when I’m back home I just spend time with my family. We’ll cook dinner together, I still do school. I’ll come back from Paris and do pre-calculus the next day.

You must have a very busy schedule. How do you manage your time and make sure you achieve everything you've planned?

I think it’s taking the time to sort out and learn what does and doesn’t work for you – how much you can handle. I am a Virgo, so I’m very on time and on top of things. I got that from my mom because for her if she says be there at a certain time, you be there 5 minutes early. So I took that from her, making sure I was always prompt, to everything.

It can be overwhelming for sure but just taking moments here and there to collect yourself and I always think that I’m so grateful for everything that I’ve been given and how could I complain when it’s something that I really want to do.

What do you do when you're finally not working?

Mainly sleep. I’ve just learned to appreciate real downtime. Staying home and spending the time with my family, because as we all get busier and have separate lives, when we all get a chance to come back together that’s my favourite time.

What is the meaning of time for you?

You shouldn’t let time pass without experiencing it to the fullest. That was the main thing my parents taught me – to live life in the moment and don’t take anything for granted.
