Enjoy the suite life at sea aboard the Regent Seven Seas ‘Explorer’

Cruises are historically known for tacky entertainment, cramped cabins, and sub-par kitchens, but a new wave of fleets are bringing the opulence and personalisation of five-star luxury resorts to the open waters, with new cruise ships equipped with luxurious, over-the-top suites to house precious cargo — think A-list celebrities, Fortune 500 execs, and those with, well, approximately HK$400K to spare for the week.

If you’re ready to splash out for the granddaddy of luxurious cruise ship suites, you can now book your spot onboard the new season of cruise itineraries from the Regent Seven Seas Explorer, a US$450 million cruise ship that debuted late last year. Upcoming voyages in April and May will see you sailing off to Barcelona, Rome, Venice and Lisbon, with the 412-sq.-metre Regent Suite available for those who want to experience what it’s like to stay in the world’s most luxurious suite at sea.

Host cocktail parties at sea from the privacy of your own living room in the Regent Suite.

The extravagant residence at sea encompasses two bedrooms, one master and one guestroom, including a separate living area featuring a custom-made Steinway grand piano — just in case you want to channel Ryan Gosling in La La Land while sailing the seas.

The Regent Suite is one of the first of its kind in the cruise industry to offer unlimited complimentary in-suite spa treatments.

Back in the master bedroom, you can enjoy full relaxation and luxury at sea with the private in-suite spa featuring a full sauna, ceramic heated loungers and a multi-jet shower. Guests of the suite can enjoy unlimited complimentary spa treatments including massages, facials and manicures.

One of the biggest drawbacks of vacationing on a cruise ship has to be the inability to get a good night’s rest, what with cramped cabin spaces and the constant rolling motion from the waves — particularly troublesome for those prone to seasickness.

You’d certainly expect US$50,000 to buy you a good night’s sleep, and you’d be right — the Regent Suite’s master bedroom comes equipped with an opulent US$150,000 Savoir No. 1 bed, featuring premium-quality natural fillings for a deeper mattress and base, combined with a boxspring made of macassar ebony trim, suede upholstery and a flexible, hand-tied cane edge.

The suite also boasts a private solarium as well as 2 1/2 bathrooms awash in marble and expensive stone detailing. Guests can take in the gorgeous sea views from the wraparound balconies or through the floor-to-ceiling windows from the plush comforts of bed. At sea, enjoy the services of a private butler 24/7, while a private car and guide await at each port for easy transportation and sightseeing.

A private balcony provides ample space for sipping Champagne and watching the waves go by.

If you’re not staying in the Regent Suite, you’ll still be well taken care of in one of the 374 other plush suites onboard, all featuring private balconies, in-suite sitting areas, marble and stone-detailed bathrooms, and premium amenities such as L’Occitane soaps and shampoos, high-speed WiFi, and flat-screen TVs with free in-room Movies-on-Demand.

Above deck, this luxury cruise ship offers five signature restaurants, from the Prime 7 steakhouse serving up succulent cuts of meat, to Setti Mari at La Veranda for Italian fine dining, and the elegant European-inspired Compass Rose complete with cascading aqua-blue chandeliers and Versace place settings for a picture-perfect setting.

The European-inspired Compass Rose features aqua-blue chandeliers and over 400 Versace place settings.

Activities onboard range from nightly entertainment shows at the 694-seat Constellation theatre to gaming at the Monte Carlo-style casino to enjoying drinks and fine cigars while you sink into a plush leather armchair at the Connoisseur Club. To get your heart rate moving onboard, go for a run along the jogging track, swim laps in the Infinity-Edge Plunge Pool, or practice your swing at the putting greens.

Of course, cruises are all about getting the most out of a short day at your port destination, and here’s where the Regent Seven Seas Cruises really excels in personalised service — dedicated Destination Service experts will make sure you’re well-equipped with an itinerary to suit your interests at every port destination, with special excursions from the Gourmet Food Tours exploring local markets and exclusive dining experiences, to the three-day post-cruise extensions of must-see destinations.

And if you’re feeling too tired from the day before to make it out to shore? Simply spend the day relaxing onboard the ship instead, enjoying an aromatherapy massage at the Canyon Ranch SpaClub or sipping a glass of Champagne from your private suite while gazing out at the beautiful blue ocean.

The Regent Seven Seas Explorer sets sail on the following dates:

9 April 2017: 10 nights from Barcelona to Venice

19 April 2017: 7 nights from Venice to Rome

26 April 2017: 10 nights from Rome to Lisbon
