Every Hongkonger knows life in our crazy, fast-paced city wouldn’t be bearable without the occasional getaway. That’s why we’re bringing you ‘Suite Staycation,’ where we review some of the finest hotel suites in Hong Kong and Macau. This month we review a stay at Island Shangri-La’s newest Horizon Club rooms.

Elevated, refined, and distinguished in style, the iconic Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong celebrates a new era of extravagance with the unveiling of its Horizon Club rooms and suites. And as luck would have it, we were recently invited for a one-night staycation in a Cityview Suite; here’s the verdict…

The location

Island Shangri-La Hotel Artwork

Situated just above Pacific Place in the heart of Admiralty, Island Shangri-La is nestled in the heart of Hong Kong’s business district, with easy access to a plethora of shopping destinations, restaurants and entertainment venues across the Island. Within just a few minutes walk through the shopping centre to the MTR, and a consistent stream of taxis available to hail at the front entrance, the hotel couldn’t be located in a more convenient area for any commute.

The room

Captivated from the moment of check-in, the lobby is adorned with grand chandeliers and a monumental, 16-storey landscape silk painting, Great Motherland of China, that can be seen from all corners. From the entrance all the way to our room, the attention to design detail is impressive.

The brand new Horizon Club rooms have been tailored to the modern traveller, and ticks all the boxes that you would want from both an extended holiday in Hong Kong and a quick weekend staycation. Led by interior architect mogul, Tristan Auer, the room concept brings a Parisian sensitive and modern Oriental approach to the design ethos of the new rooms. It’s clear that inspiration has been taken from local architecture and culture in its touches and emphasis on “Framing the View”, pointing to the diverse and animated landscape seen from the large, open windows.

The luxurious Cityview Suite comprimises of one large bedroom with separate living room, walk through closet and two bathrooms amplify the residential feel of the suite. The living room features a sizable and bespoke day bed that encompasses the length of the room (including the 180-degree wrap around views over Victoria Harbour), and dining table surfaced in eggshell. Ornaments handmade by Vietnamese artisans and the leather upholstered chairs are touches that do not go unnoticed either.

Equipped with a maxi pantry complete with wine cooler, fridge draws, distilled water tap and an array of snacks, the room also caters to the tech savvy with complimentary Wi-Fi , wireless charging stations installed in each bedside table, 55-inch flat screen television, and built-in Bluetooth speakers in bathroom.

The refreshments

Island Shangri-La Horizon Club Lounge

Renowned for some of the finest hotel dining in the world, there are plenty of food and beverage offerings available to hungry guests. Those staying in a Horizon Club room or suite are invited to enjoy Horizon Club Lounge benefits that include daily breakfast, free-flow evening cocktails and canapés between 5.30pm-9.30pm alongside all-day light refreshments .

We remain huge fans of Head Chef Romain Dupeyre’s French fine dining menu at one-Michelin-star Petrus, where his innovative approach to food is guaranteed to take you on a culinary journey. Spoilt with a fresh menu bursting with flavour, the earthy Beetroot Tortellini with pistachios and goat cheese and slow-cooked Veal Cheek, Vin Jaune, asparagus and morels were standout.

Those in search of cocktails and comfort food can make a reservation and renowned Lobster Bar and Grill.

Ways to unwind

Although sadly the swimming pool remained closed over our stay due to government restrictions, Island Shangri-La boasts a serene Health Club & Spa. World-class facilities inclusive of swimming pool, spa, sauna 24-hour and fitness centre are open to those looking to relax, re-set and unwind.

The verdict

It comes as no surprise that Island Shangri-La is a connoisseur of customer service, ensuring that there is nothing short of impeccable service from check-in to check-out. Its Horizon Club Rooms are a breath of fresh air amongst traditional elegance, and coinciding with the 30th Anniversary of Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong this year, is top on our list to book in to time and again.
