It’s not just about smelling divine.
Most people keep a diary; Ben Gorham — founder of Byredo — however, takes it a step further. A step inward, if you will. Byredo’s portfolio of fragrances is a retrospective on Gorham’s life. His thoughts, ideas, emotions. Moments in history that caught his attention. Memories, too, captured, distilled and bottled in the now-iconic cylindrical coffrets, topped off with a rounded black cap.
Over half a decade ago, leather goods became something of an obsession.
”I have the obsession of perfection. I wanted to take the abstraction of scent and channel it into other products — I wanted the same perfection. The craftsmanship of leather goods has that same quality for me; it has become another medium for this exploration,” said Gorham, in conversation about his leather goods range.
The interiors of Byredo’s ifc pop-up is just as you’d expect for a Stockholm-headquartered brand. Scandi-style simplicity meets a touch of quirk; a space that honours Byredo’s love of curvilinear shapes — note: that wavy wooden divider is stunning — as well as the structured, architectural lines of the stars-of-the-show: the leather collection.

Gorham’s fastidious approach to design is well-demonstrated through this leather collection. It’s not about the flashy and the gimmick; instead, it’s about refinement that’s quiet, considered and thoughtful. Calfskin and Spanish lambskin that’s soft and supple — some gleaming with a waxed finish — and hardware spotlighting the brand’s ‘B’ initial are little details that begin telling the story of this obsessive journey with perfection.
Byredo’s leather goods are produced in a single location: a small, family-owned factory, just outside Florence. From the signature Blueprint bag — this season, revisited in a new ‘micro’ size — to the accordion-shaped Umbrella wallet and zipped-up perfume holders, this collection — much like the brand’s library of scents — is one made to last. A timeless tribute to the very best of design.
For those looking for last-minute Valentine’s Day gifting ideas: same-day personalisations — exclusive to the ifc mall pop-up store — are available on the leather collection’s travel perfume case, luggage tag, card holder and umbrella wallet.
