    The Pilates Studio

    Pilates is an exercise that strengthens and tones your core and improves posture and flexibility. So it’s great news that The Pilates Studio recently opened in the city. Started by Samir and Namrata Purohit, official fitness experts to The Femina Miss India International Pageants and Official Pilates Coaches to the Mumbai City FC, this fitness studio is a huge hit throughout the country with branches in 12 cities. They are the first studio in the world to offer Pilates and a simulated altitude training room under the same roof. What sets them apart is that the workouts are tailor made to suit the fitness goals of each particular client and can be completely customised to meet individual needs.

    Kyogi Wellness

    If you want a holistic approach to fitness that goes beyond fitness fads, Yoga is for you, and Kyogi Wellness is a good place to start. Run by Varuna Shunglu, a yogini associated with the Yoga Alliance International, the workouts at Kyogi are designed around the eight limbs of Yoga and not just Asana (the various poses.) There are trainers who are experts in the various forms such as Yin, Hatha, Iyengar, Vinyasa, Aerial, Acro, and Ashtanga, will help you find the right form for your body type. They will also advise you on the lifestyle changes such as food and meditation that go hand in hand with the practice.

    Endorphins – Corrective Exercise Studio

    Another place that takes a holistic and integrated approach to fitness is Endorphins-Corrective Exercise Studio. Run by former cricketer Ranadeep Moitra who is a certified specialist from The National Strength and Conditioning Association of America and has worked as a fitness advisor to the Indian Cricket Team and Indian Football Academy, Endorphins encourages machine free workouts, prioritising long-term wellness over get-fit-quick programmes. “A corrective exercise is an exercise or movement taught to improve a specific dysfunction that if left uncorrected can cause a musculoskeletal injury,” says Moitra. Through this practice you will be able to alleviate any aches and pains and individual aberrations and proceed towards achieving your fitness aims.

    Flash Fitness

    Dance workouts are a great form of cardio and it’s so much fun to burn calories shaking it to your favourite tunes. Bust a move with a Flash Fitness dance class. Famous for their power-packed Zumba classes (Zumba is an aerobic dance work out that has its roots in a combination of Salsa, Flamenco, Reggaeton and Merengue), they also have a bunch of other dance classes to choose from. ‘Step Up’ fans who would like to gain some street cred can try their hand at a Hip Hop class. They also have Bollywood classes, Belly Dancing classes, and Salsa and Ballet classes for the little ones.

    Housed in a tranquil south Kolkata bungalow this spa cum wellness centre is the perfect retreat. Though they offer a wide range of services including Aqua Aerobics, Gym, Pilates, Yoga and more, they are one of few places in the city to offer Krav Maga. This is a self defense technique developed by the Israel Defensive Forces, derived from a combination of Judo, Karate, Boxing and Wrestling; it has found its way into the fitness regimes of Brad Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio, and Jennifer Lopez amongst others. What sets it apart from other martial arts forms is how practical it is. It equips you to deal with confrontations that you may face in real world situations such as muggings or sexual assault unlike martial arts practices that teach you to combat other skilled practitioners in controlled settings.
