Whether we’re staying indoors or travelling again. Get your grooming up to par with some of the best undercut styles this year.

There’s no question about it: The undercut is undoubtedly one of the most versatile styles for men, working incredibly well for curly, straight, and wavy hair types. It allows every man (and woman) to sport a style that is exclusively their own. While there are innumerable variations that can be created, we’ve selected the 5 best undercuts that work best for summer, alongside the best grooming products for each silhouette.

The Slicked-back Connected Undercut, with Paul Mitchel’s Reformer Texturizing Hair Putty

The slicked-back connected undercut

Unlike the classic undercut, this style focuses on transition and fade, rather than having a division or break. The ideal length for the fade should be between 3 and 4 with the trimmer. While doing so, don’t request the barber for a break between the side fade and the quiff – let it be one continuous transition. For a hairstyle like this, we’d prefer a matte look rather than a glossy finish.

The Reformer Texturizing Hair Putty’s dry texture gives medium hold to the hair along with volume, without making the hair greasy. Apply a small amount to dry hair and set the hair as desired. The lightweight style booster works to pump up skinny strands and grips fine hair for extra control with a light, no-product feel.

Price: Rs 1,250 (approx). Available at salons.

The Pompadour fade, with Davines Strong Hold Moulding Clay

The Pompadour has been around for a while, but with constant revision over the decades, it has resulted in a new-age silhouette fusing with the undercut. The Pompadour undercut requires a heavy yet delicate side fade that allows the focus to stay on the quiff. This style requires heavy-duty hold, which is why we’ve selected Davines new moulding clay.

This zero-impact product is a matte modelling clay with a strong hold factor. The product gives texture to dry hair and the formula does not contain water to endure the humid climate. This product is ideal for a messy, beach look, enabling a coarse separation of the hair without leaving behind any residue. Apply a small amount to dry hair and arrange to look effortless yet put together, within minutes.

Price: Rs 2,200 (approx), available at Davines.

Curly Side-Parts, with TrueFitt & Hill Styling Wax, Rs 2,500

Dealing with curly hair can be a tedious affair. To tame them, we’d suggest going short and having a strong side-parting. Have a well-faded side and go a little longer at the break – that’d be just enough to let you comb the curls. The quiff can be treated just like straight hair, although it does require a very compact crop.

Styling Wax is specially formulated with Propolis (a naturally occurring resin), known to have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that are good for maintaining strong hair follicles and a healthy scalp. It provides a high shine finish and it is perfect for use when shaping a classic 1920s/30s traditional hairstyle, or a more modern short to a medium classic style. It is easy to use and creates a defined, structured look.

Price: Rs 2,500, available at Truefitt & Hill.

The Classic Slick-Back Undercut, with TIGI Bed Head For Men Power Play Firm Finish Gel

The Classic Slick-Back Undercut

Be it Bradley Cooper, Ranveer Singh, or Jake Gyllenhaal, the slick-back is unarguably one of the most iconic hairstyles of all time. But of course, this isn’t a style that would suit anyone who decides to grow out their hair. It takes special care and nourishment.

TIGI’s Bed Head suit this best because it has a firm finish that keeps those long locks in place, has a non-greasy finish, and a super-strong hold, perfect for slick-backs. While protecting your hair from summer humidity, Vitamin E present in the gel takes care of the damage.

Price: Rs 1,050, available at Amazon India.

Short and Clean Undercut, with Sebastian Professional Craft Clay Remoldable Matte Texturizer

Sometimes we just need to go back to basics and indulge in a simple summer crop. Going short, yet big on texture, this is a timeless undercut variation that thrives on the simple fade. What’s important here is to keep the corners clean and a well-textured top.

Creating a dry, matte look and feel with Sebastian Professional Craft Clay – their professional hair styler provides natural hold right from the roots, allowing you to embrace texture. Craft Clay re-moldable texturizer is particularly indicated for short to medium hairstyles, adding volume and strong definition to the hair. Infused with earth minerals, Sebastian modelling clay separates and restyles hair texture.
