The big news is here for makeup addicts around the world: Hermès has officially launched lipsticks and it looks like there’s more coming our way in terms of beauty.
The French fashion house has unveiled its first product, Rouge Hermès, a 24-shade collection of matte and satin lipsticks following the footsteps of other designer-led labels like Chanel, Dior, Christian Louboutin, Burberry, and Dolce & Gabbana.
The noteworthy aspect of these set of lipsticks is that they come with Hermès traditional packaging – the colour-blocking is stunning and the gilded additions give it a simple, luxe feel. The clean approach fits the Instagram aesthetic so well — it’s created to go viral.
They say that the lipsticks are inspired by the brand’s archives that house 900 leather swatches and 75,000 silk colours — imagine the colour wheel and shade card. The lipsticks also mimic the different leather finishes — satin finish that resonates with smooth calf leather, and a dedicated matte finish that comes close to fine-grained suede. The most interesting shade we saw is a deep crimson called ‘Rouge Casaque’ and it is apparently close to the leather finish of the iconic Kelly in Clémence bullcalf.
If you thought it’s just lipsticks, you cannot be more mistaken — there is a lip care balm, universal lip pencil, Poppy lip shine, and a lip brush. And they all come with tiny calfskin leather accessories that add to the product line. A pop-up lipstick case with a mirror alongside a moon-shaped mirror on a cord, that can function as a necklace – that’s just taking luxury to another level.
The lipstick cases are not just eye candy, they are created to be sustainable and are made of metal and permabrass hardware. The lipsticks on the other hand boast of a lot of natural ingredients such as beeswax and white mulberry extracts that help with hydration and a signature scent custom-blended by Christine Nagel, the nose behind Hermès fragrances. A handy lip brush and is also an add-on – more bang for your buck.
The lipsticks designed by Pierre Hardy will hit stores internationally on March 4. And the Rouge Hermès comes in a refillable metal lipstick case that looks as alluring in a makeup bag as on your lips. The made-in-Italy lipstick also comes at a not-so-alarmingly-steep price point of $67 with a refill at $47. And we say that because we were expecting the prices to be on par with Christian Louboutin ($120). As the luxury lipstick market expands, we took this moment to evaluate what’s out there. A look at the five best luxe lipsticks worth your time and money.
It’s a well-known fact that Japanese labels make the most beautiful red lipstick on the market and this popular lipstick is made with Japan’s Koishimaru silk and is satin-smooth with deep pigments and a high-gloss finish.
The fact that Sisley just landed in India aside, this formula is perhaps the softest, weightless one ever. It’s known to hydrate the lips and is equipped with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Calendula extract to give the formula a rich texture.
A long-lasting formula, the Rouge G formula is a moisturizing lipstick that can be termed creamy and glossy at the same time. For us, this formula enriched with plant-based polymers and silver microcrystals with a reflective power makes it stand out.
Inspired by the middle-east and the art deco movement, this vial-like beauty delivers a rich pigment with intense colour and si velvety in texture. It’s almost like owning jewellery because you can use the silk ribbon they offer to turn it into a necklace. Made with seed butters and natural oils, this is one big buy.
The very first luxe lipstick of sorts, Tom Ford’s USP lies in the packaging and the pigment. The long-lasting formula uses exotic ingredients like soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru, butter and chamomilla flower oil – that means, incredibly smooth application and a polished finish.
The new lipsticks will be available in stores and on hermes.com. The range will be available in 35 countries.
