Tell us a bit about Tsara? How did it come about?

As a Chemical Engineering student in BITS Pilani Dubai, I had first-hand experience in handling chemicals and knowing how toxic they can be. And one day, it struck me that in a world where there were so many young women passionate about makeup, there weren’t many makeup brands taking the natural and organic path. At least, not as much in India. I learned more about how natural ingredients are extracted and used in various products while interning at a natural ingredients factory. At that time the market was already cluttered with organic or natural haircare and skincare brands, but organic makeup was still very uncapped and niche. I couldn’t find nontoxic makeup that didn’t involve some sort of trade-off in terms of colour or texture and natural products were always perceived to not work as good as conventional, synthetic products.

It was then that I started the label Tsara and since day one, we wanted our products to be able to give the same or better finish compared to conventional makeup products without compromise. After graduation, I got in touch with a team of amazing formulators who helped me find clean and green ingredients and we spent 2.5 years researching on how to make our products as natural and organic as possible. We officially launched in June 2020 with 10 shades of natural liquid lip colors that are super nourishing and highly pigmented.

What makes Tsara different from other beauty labels? What is the USP?

Our philosophy has always been about using organic, natural ingredients to make our products. And we’re also a fun, peppy label that millennials and Gen Z love. Tsara is also vegan, clean and cruelty-free and caters to all Indian skin tones, only making use of ECOCERT certified ingredients.

Tell us a bit about the bestsellers and which colours are popular?

We’ve seen great response for colours like On The Mauve, Sunday Nude, Rise n Pink. They are definitely our best sellers. Most of the ingredients we use have been certified by ECOCERT, one of the largest international organic certification organisations in the world. We make sure that we do not formulate our products with silicones, which means, our formulations stay as pure and natural as possible.

We used the right blend of waxes and oils to make our formula more velvety, super moisturising and waterproof which are otherwise not achievable without adding synthetic ingredients. Our ingredients also include natural Vitamin E which boosts circulation and helps generate new skin cells, making lips softer. We also use Jojoba oil which has anti-inflammatory properties that helps lips from chapping and a blend of sunflower wax and soybean oil which act as major contributing factors for the texture and retains the natural moisture from the lips.

Where does Tsara stand on in terms of sustainability?

From day one, we made sure all our ingredients very ethically-sourced and since we were starting off as an online only brand, it was very important for us to incorporate sustainable material in our logistics and shipments as well. We use reused paper and recyclable plastic and we are continuing the research on incorporating biodegradable materials as well.

Future plans and what’s the plan for 2021?

We’re working on a few exciting products right now and are in the last stages of R&D. Hopefully we will be launching two other products by next year, apart from the popular Tsara lipsticks.

Tsara lipsticks are priced at Rs 1,100 and you can shop for the label, here
