What’s on our top shelf this week? The 2020 Manish Malhotra Beauty by MyGlamm, which is all about glitter and shine and everything nice.
Let’s get the hard stuff out of the way. Manish Malhotra’s first collection in conjunction with MyGlamm had the world swooning over his jewelled eyeshadows but failed to stay on the radar long enough to be called invincible. By that we mean that the designer’s debut collection did lack a certain je ne sais quoi, that ability to stay on any beauty editor’s desk as a timeless classic.
The bejewelled eyeshadows were priced at Rs 1250, a good price point for a Huda-like desert palette with varied and pigmented shades to make sure Indian women shine at every social occasion. His nail polishes, while they came in great colours, did get into the bad books of Diet Sabya with their photoshopped images. The first collection had mixed reactions, but we thought the lipsticks and the eyeshadows worked wonders for Indian skin.
This month, Malhotra launches his new campaign with a bunch of influencers and once again, the collection titled 2020 Celebration Edit, chooses to go with a shine mandate. That means, bold highlighter creams, creamy matte liquid lipsticks, shimmery eye pencils, and even an outrageous, Glitter Mascara (Rs 950) to celebrate its first anniversary. Add to that new-age products like cheek chalk (a blush) and liquid metal (highlighter). The packaging is just as classic — with black and gold gilt edges, a nod to his glamorous, Bollywood sheen.
The couturier has also unveiled his new campaign with Mira Kapoor, Tahira Kashyap, Ananya Birla, Aishwarya Desai, Medha Rana, Aishwarya Sushmita, Priyanka Kapadia, and Anjali Lama, as the faces of the campaign to drive home the idea that ‘beauty is for everyone’. Varied skin types, skin colours and inclusivity — this time, he went ahead and made beauty a bit more democratic and we like that.
The 2020 Celebration Edit features five products — all innovative and made for Instagram. The Face and Body Highlighter (Rs 1,250) is by far the best product — the formula is smooth, bold, and easily blendable. The shine is natural and luminous, but a word of caution — it’s thick and dries easily so fastest finger first.
The Liquid Matte Lipsticks (Rs 995) were not as successful for us — the pigment is patchy, a little too thick. The colour range was impressive though and the formula stayed put — our favourite shades are Sugar Coral, Mess With Me, and Envy Me. There are also two extensions of their bestselling 9-in-1 Shimmering Eyeshadow Palettes (Rs 1,850) that will be perfect for creating day to night looks and if the formula is anything like the last one, we’d say it’s a winner. The quads have such interesting shades — Reverie and Enchante have lilacs and dove greys.
The Metallic Cheek Chalks (Rs 1,350) are a great buy, the shades Ignite and Inferno are great for Indian weddings. The best buy for us is the Glitter Eyeliner (Rs 850) — value-for-money and a beautiful shiny formula that’s subtle yet interesting. Perfect day-to-night accompaniment for the working girl.
