Lakme Fashion Week, which concluded yesterday in Mumbai, had all the trappings of glamour coupled with easy, breezy looks. While fashion focused on everything from sustainability to grandeur, beauty trends were ripe with monotones, red lips, and smokey eyes, give or take an occasional red eyeshadow. We decoded the season’s best looks so you can stay on the stylish side of colour. Note: The colour wheel has truly been reinvented this season.

Red and maroon lips at Shantanu & Nikhil

Kareena Kapoor Khan wore a beautiful black Shantanu & Nikhil gown, paired with an electric red lipstick and a stunning smokey eye. A classic Kareena look, yes, but it was the sophistication that took it a notch higher. Opt for glossy reds – the international runways are teeming with them as well – and ensure statement eyes as well. More is more.

Smokey with a sharp liner

It’s easy to see why this would a winner because the eyes are going to stay in focus as the rest of the face goes bare – not even a hint of blush or highlighter. The eyes on the other hand, at Raghavendra Rathore, went deeper and darker with the addition of a sharp liner.

Coral shadow at Eka & Gazal

It was coral all the way at Eka and Gazal Mishra’s shows. With the shade card going more pastel, it’s going to be a wearable hue this season. The swipe of colour on the eye makes everything look effortless. A sharp contouring adds some depth, but mostly, it’s the coral that pops.

Purple lips at Latha Puttana

Lip colours these days go from the lightest of nudes to the heaviest of greys, and it’s time for an offbeat shade to rule. Latha Puttana’s runway showcased this grey lilac lip that bordered on high-performance. The way to make it work is to leave the rest of the face plain.

Bright red eyes: Shantanu & Nikhil, and Gauri & Nainika

Red is back with a bang, and not just on the lips. The colour has made its way to the eyes. While Shantanu & Nikhil used it as a bright swipe on the sides of the eyes, Gauri & Nainika went with a bright eye and with a bit of it on the cheeks.

Brown lips at Anushree Reddy & Mishru

The ’80s are back but without the garish brown lip liner; say hello to nude and brown lips. This season, they were the star of the show with just a bit of highlighter and bronzer to give an earthy look. Anushree Reddy’s brown was a tad darker, while Mishru almost made the look more vintage.

Monotones at Anavila and Nikhil Thampi

The biggest trend to come out of SS ’19 is the no-hue look. There is absolutely no colour on the face – no bronzer, blush, or lipstick. This look is all about creating a sculpted, chiselled look and just keeping it the way it is.

Dewy corals at Anita Dongre

While Eka kept it bright, Anita Dongre definitely opted for easy-going charm with coral. The cheeks were bursting with happiness, with a rather peachy glint. And the eyes were subtle and the rose gold highlighter brought the whole look together.

Iridescent highlights at Kanika Goyal & Shriya Som

We had written about the use of glitter at Coverfx. This season, these lilac, blue, and unicorn-ish highlighters are adding to the look in the smallest way possible. At Kanika Goyal, the look is easy and effortless; the highlight at strategic places adds the charm.

The romantic look at Rajdeep Ranawat and Sukriti & Aakriti

This one’s a staple on SS runways but this time, it’s more dewy and glossy. With lips, cheeks and eyes going pastel, it’s the most wearable trend of the lot.

Baby blues at Anka and Tahweave

From light, dusky blues to intense bright blues, smokey eyes in the hue were the focus on the ramps of Tahweave and Anka, and the fact that they were layered with metallics or shimmer, added more drama.
