Reinterpreting Indian textiles and assimilating them into mainstream fashion has been Ritu Kumar’s signature for past 50 years. There is hardly a Bollywood celebrity who has not adorned one of her classic pieces. Now she is set make the world of home decor a part of her creative canvas. She recently introduced her first home decor collection, Ritu Kumar Home, comprising a wide range of bed linen, wallpapers, tableware, and home décor, and we got a first-hand look at her designs.
Once again Kumar has reinterpreted different forms of Indian crafts in her design, be it brass tableware, or cushions and wallpapers featuring 18th century prints. Every piece takes tradition and gives it contemporary design touch. “Our heritage is closely linked to Indian textiles and it lends seamlessly to furnishings. Hence, it was only natural to move into this direction to make beautiful Indian textiles, prints, and motifs a part of one’s everyday life as well,” says Kumar.
The collection features indigenous art forms from different regions of India. There are textiles inspired by Jamaavar shawls from Kashmir; patterns that mimic ‘jaalis’ of the havelis of Lucknow; exquisite crafts of Machilipatnam; and vegetable-printed Kalamkaris. The visual narrative also includes inspiration from the Sanganer and Bagru School of Rajasthan.
The colour scheme is signature Kumar, from the many tones of cracked white, porcelain, and marigold yellows, to dusty rose, mehendi, and meenakari jewel tones. The colours are both rustic, organic, and featuring vegetable-dyed bases.
