Plastic Free Madras

Now that I’ve almost successfully done it, let me just tell you how easy it is to switch out multiple everyday items to more sustainable alternatives. Dental care products, cotton buds, combs, and more all have eco-friendly versions, and Plastic Free Madras’s superior quality alternatives do the job perfectly. Aesthetically pleasing as well, our only suggestion would be to order in bulk.

This shop is, hands down, one of the most adorable things we’ve seen on Instagram. A zero-waste space, founder Shweta Balachandran sews all products from textile waste that you will see here. On offer are Ajrak wallets, cloth baskets, headbands, mini-purses, and more — all washable. DM to get in touch.

Amongst Chennai’s more popular sustainable labels, Alankrit makes handmade, woven bags. Their round bags are my personal favourites — made of atta grass, they’re of higher quality than your regular rattan bags. Alankrit also does a lot of basket weave bags, combined with local fabrics. So, if you’re looking to make a style statement, check them out. They ship pan India. DM for orders.

Mireya

Last, but not least, is another brand that celebrates minimalism. Founder Miraclyn Justin makes the cutest little crochet toys and dolls, everything from adorable giraffes to a crocheted Deadpool. While they are toys that are perfect for children, because they are non-toxic and there’s no plastic waste, there are cowls, tops, and dreamcatchers for adults. The crochet creations can be used as ornaments and décor items too, and Justin can customise as per demand. DM on Instagram to reach out.
