Ever since the lockdown in March, OTT platforms have thrived. Now India’s looking at its first theatrical release on November 15 with Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari.
Starring Diljit Dosanjh, Manoj Bajpayee, and Fatima Sana Shaikh in lead roles, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari takes us back to the 90s. Funnily enough, it’s not just the 90s that we’re talking about, but Bollywood’s 90s in Bombay which means the jokes laced with sexual innuendos, Indian-English vernacular, and Bollywood entertainment on steroids with boogie-all-night dance numbers.
Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari: Story –
The comedy revolves around the life of Suraj Singh Dhillon (played by Diljit Dosanjh) who is on a lookout for the perfect wife. And he would have found one if only his stars were aligned right. Enter, Detective Madhu Mangal Rane (played by Manoj Bajpayee), a wedding detective who does background checks on grooms. Mangal’s assessment of Suraj takes a toll on Suraj’s life, one pratfall at a time. Nonetheless, Suraj decides to turntables on Mangal by starting an affair with his sister, played by Fatima Sana Shaikh. She is a well-cultured girl with secrets that’ll compel Mangal to question his detective capabilities.
The laughable whirlwind is the result of a pre-social media decade when people had to find everything about others physically, and that’s where the film holds a firm grip on the storyline.
We’ll be seeing Diljit Dosanjh on the big screen after Good Newwz (2019). And as for Fatima Sana Shaikh, we are counting on her comedy skills as she will also be seen in Ludo this year, too. The cast also features Annu Kapoor, Supriya Pilgaonkar, and Vijay Raaz, among others. The film is directed by Abhishek Sharma (who gained popularity with films such as Tere Bin Laden (2010), The Shaukeens (2014), and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran (2018); and produced by Shariq Patel and Subhash Chandra under the banners Zee Studios and Essel Vision Productions.
