Saina, a biopic on badminton player Saina Nehwal, releases today. Here’s all you need to know about this much-anticipated Parineeti Chopra-starrer.
Parineeti Chopra is back with a bang as her second film in March 2021. This is a biopic of Indian badminton player Sania Nehwal, who has received multiple accolades for her masterful performances in court. The first female from India to be ranked number one in 2015, Nehwal is also a Padma Bhushan recipient, India’s third-highest civilian award.
In a time where we all need some inspiration, Saina Nehwal’s story is perfect for the current mood. The film revolves around the life of a small-town middle-class girl with a dream. Her unmatched determination and grit led her to make history for all women in India. Just like all the other sportsmen in our country, Nehwal’s family also faced financial difficulties along with societal pressure to pursue this profession.
We get to be a part of Nehwal’s journey from the very start. The film begins with the eight-year-old starting her training in Haryana and then continues onto all the important wins and losses in her life. From losing matches she’s worked for all her life to painful physical injuries, the sportswoman endured it all. Her biggest fans are her parents Usha Rani and Harvir Singh, who are badminton players themselves, never letting her lose faith or face in the game and wholeheartedly supported her career. They were determined to see their daughter rise to the top and shine.
Naishaa Kaur Bhatoye plays Nehwal’s younger self, who is a badminton player herself. Her connection as a player comes across as pure in the few glimpses we catch in the trailer. Manav Kaul plays Pullela Gopichand, the coach that led Nehwal to victory. Subhrajyoti Barat plays Harvir Singh Nehwal, and Meghna Malik plays Usha Rani.
Directed by Amole Gupte, the film makes a promising attempt at doing justice to yet another biopic on a sports personality in India.
