Christmas is around the corner and with an eye on all things merry and bright, the city is looking forward to The India Story. This annual festival is a three–day celebration that serves as a confluence for design, music, food and art, all made and produced in India. In its fifth edition this year, the theme is ‘Conjunction – where history and future collide’ as a way of bringing into focus all things traditional that have transformed and evolved to stay contemporary.
According to Swarup Dutta, creative director & scenographer at The India Story, ”Conjunction as a theme is relevant as the spheres of art and design overlap often in the modern creative space. Conjunction in this edition of The India Story is viewed as a connection between the past and the present through an intuitive curation of inter-generational objects, spaces and ideas in the form of catalysts to bring these groups of ‘related’ people closer.”
The India Story Art Exhibit will showcase various artistic interpretations of this theme by a mix of upcoming and established artists such as Aahel Iyer, Namrata Kumar, Reya Ahmed, Shreya Alok Gupta, Susanta Pal, Narayan Sinha, Bobo, Kassa and Scarlet Splendour. The second edition of the Art Exhibit will be inaugurated by Bose Krishnamachari, founder member & president, Kochi Biennale Foundation. We can also expect live gigs every evening with a whole host of different bands and live DJ performances (Big Family Blues, Popcult, DJ Manish and more) to have us bopping into the festive season on a high note.
Fashion enthusiasts have a lot look forward to as well. A fashion show by eminent designer Payal Khandelwal will showcase the best of her brocade collection. In addition to this, the shopping enclave will have pop-up shops by a wide range of homegrown designers from all over India including Bhane, The Baklava Box, Suta and Co, Kritha, Carte Blanche India, Bloni, and many more. Sharing space with them will be a lot of interesting home décor and lifestyle brands as well such as Art and Found, Freedom Tree, Maison 15 and more, all under one roof.
One of the nicest things about this weekend extravaganza is the variety of tasty treats available to fuel us while we revel in the festivities. From biryani to pizza and momos to street food, no matter what you like munching on, you are sure to find a favourite among the food stalls.
“Over the past few years, there have been several conversations about what it means to conceptualize, design and curate an exposition of this scale. Our milestone fifth year will create a platform to build meaningful experiences at The India Story. The best of fashion, lifestyle, cuisines, art and the performing arts the country has to offer will be showcased in a manner so creative that it will engage all the senses, “says Madhu Neotia, initiator and managing Trustee, Neotia Arts Trust. Whether you want to get in some last-minute Christmas shopping or just soak in the festive cheer, The India Story is the place to be this weekend.
