January 15th marks Kajol’s OTT debut with Tribhanga: Tedhi Medhi Crazy, releasing only on Netflix. The film is written and directed by Hum Aapke Hai Koun actor Renuka Shahane. Netflix original Tribhanga: Story & Movie cast –

Kajol plays famous Odissi dancer Anu, who resents her writer mother Nayan played by Tanvi Azmi. Going into one more generation, you see Anu’s daughter Masha played by Mithila Palkar, who is about to have a baby. You get to watch these three generations of women lead their lives and deal with their circumstances. The film delves into the complexities of a mother-daughter relationship. The director tries to show the impact a mother has on a child’s life until the child herself becomes a mother.

The core of the story is Anu’s resentment of her mother’s unconventional decision that she believes has ruined her life. The character played by OTT star Mithila Palkar is Shanane’s twist, while adding a new intergenerational perspective. Anu is almost exactly like her mother but does not realize it until she has a daughter of her own. Although the film is not autobiographical Shahane states that there are many parts of the film that are related to her life and personal experiences.

Shahane has taken her love for Odissi dance and used it as a metaphor to describe her characters. Anu describes Nayan as the slightly off-center pose ‘abhang’, Masha as the in-balance ‘sama-bhang’, and herself as ‘Tribhanga’, the pose with three bends at varying angles.

Kajol announced her film on social media by saying, “Tribhanga, matlab, tedhi, medhi, crazy, but sexy. #Tribhanga, premieres 15 January, only on Netflix.”
