This year, at the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, it wasn’t the red carpet highlights that stole the show as the traditional ceremony in Los Angeles had to be cancelled due to the pandemic, but the nominations and the new slate of winners. Who is Andrij Parekh, Emmys 2020 best director for Succession?
Director and cinematographer of Ukrainian and Indian descent, Andrij Parekh won the Primetime Emmy Award for directing the Hunting episode of HBO’s drama series Succession (2018 – present). Succession became the most-nominated series with eighteen nominations and won the coveted Outstanding Drama Series, as well as the awards for writing, directing and casting, and acting.
The series, also streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, essays the journey of the Roy family, the dysfunctional owners of Waystar Royco, a global media and hospitality empire, who are fighting for control of the company amid uncertainty about the health of the family’s patriarch, Logan Roy (played by Brian Cox). It has received several accolades for not just its storyline but also the stellar cast it features. The series is created by Jesse Armstrong, who also wrote Black Mirror‘s episode, The Entire History Of You.
Andrij Parekh was born in Boston and raised in Minneapolis. A Tisch School of the Arts alumnus, Parekh has worked on shows like Half Belson, Sugar, Blue Valentine, The Zookeeper’s Wife, 13 Reasons Why, Madame Bovary, and Show Me a Hero. Over the years, he has managed to tighten the noose around Indie film industry as an ”outsider” in America, which bagged him titles such as Filmmaker Magazine’s ’25 New Faces of Indie Film’ and Variety’s ‘Ten Cinematographers to Watch’.
Andrij Parekh has also worked on shows like Watchmen (2019), which scored seven nominations at Emmys 2020 and won three, and NBCUniversal’s Brave New World, a dystopian series based on the same book by Aldous Huxley. Apart from TV shows, Parekh has helmed short films like Dead Roosters and Zimove Vesilya.
