Delhi Crime on Netflix puts Indian series on global map: Wins big at International Emmys 2020

The Shefali Shah-starrer on Netflix, Delhi Crime, won the Best Drama Series Award at the International Emmys 2020 last night.

In a big moment for Indian web series, Delhi Crime has gone on to win one of the biggest prize at the 48th International Emmy Awards: The Best Drama Series.

Shefali Shah as DCP

Based on the infamous Delhi gang rape of 2012, the series follows DCP Vartika (Shefali Shah) as she cracks the case. The seven-episode series is based on in-depth research and focuses on the hurdles faced by the police in the investigation, especially one that has the nation’s sentiments attached to a great extent. Director Richie Mehta presented the aftermath of such heinous acts and its impact. A mix of fact and fiction, the series is a to-the-point projection, and no-frills added narration, which is what the real-life episode requites. Performances by Shah, Rasika Duggal, Adil Hussain, and Yashaswini Dayama have been applauded since it came out in 2019.

In his speech at the virtual ceremony, Mehta said, “I dedicate this award to all the women who not just endure the violence that so many men inflict on them, but are then tasked to solve the problem. Finally, to the tireless mother, and her daughter. Not a day goes by when I don’t think about you both and what the world subjected you two to. And I hope none of us ever forget that.” Actors Shah and Hussain took to Instagram to share the news as well.

The other two nominations from India were Amazon Prime Video’s Four More Shots Please! for Best Comedy and Arjun Mathur of Made in Heaven for the Best Performance by an Actor. While the two didn’t win, Indian productions have been recurring nominations at the International Emmys, with last four nominations in 2019 as well.
