What to expect from Dhanush’s ‘Jagame Thandhiram’, releasing on Netflix today

Dhanush’s latest, a gangster flick Jagame Thandhiram drops today on OTT giant Netflix and fans finally get to watch their favourite star in a movie that should have released in 2020 but was put off because of the pandemic.

Dhanush in Jagame Thandhiram

This movie is close on the heels of the stupendous success of Karnan, though the subjects of the films couldn’t be more different. Jagame Thandhiram is all about a gangster Suruli (Dhanush) fighting the good and evil battle over which place to call home. Here’s what you can look forward to in the movie.

Dhanush himself, of course!

Dhanush fans just can’t get enough of this National Award-winning actor. From the trailer, fans glimpse a strong, if eccentric gangster Suruli trying to assert himself and take a stand against his counterpart Sivadoss. There seems to be an interesting mix of comedy, with action that one can look forward to, two areas of acting that are a forte for the Kolaveri Di star.

Interesting debuts

The film welcomes a Hollywood star cast as well. Prominent among them is actor James Cosmo, well known for his characters like Jeor Mormont in Games of Thrones, and Field Marshall Haig in Wonder Woman. He has also been a part of numerous TV series like Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, The Bay, His Dark Materials, Name of the Rose, Shetland and Stag, among many others. It will be interesting to see how Cosmo’s screen presence works in the Tamil cinematic world. Actors like Morgan Freeman, Al Pacino, and Pierce Brosnan were approached for this role.

Jagame Thandhiram

Joju George, a well-known face in Malayalam cinema makes his debut in Kollywood with this movie in a negative role – that of Sivadoss. Joju George was recently seen as the stoic Maniyappan in Nayattu, Siraj in Halal Love Story, Appachan in Kilometers and Kilometers and Babu in Virus. It will be interesting to see how he essays the role of a gangster in the Tamil genre of film-making.

Spectacular locations

Jagame Thandhiram is shot across England, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan. Each of these locales is spectacular in itself and are showcased across the movie. This will be something to look out for. A significant section of the shoot was done across Faversham, Kent in England. It then moved to London, where a single schedule of 20 days was completed. In India, the movie has been shot across Madurai and Rajasthan. Interestingly, Dhanush is on record to say that this was the quickest shoot of his career at just four months.

Themes to reflect on

Karthik Subbaraj, the director and co-writer, began with making a movie about gangsters, up in arms with each other. In the course of the movie, he also explores the idea of home and what it means to each one of us. He touches also on dealing with xenophobia and with the constant changing of cultural environments. It will be quite interesting to see how this pans out across the movie.
