The newest edition to the Kolkata culinary scene has a dual personality — an airy relaxed rooftop cafe by day and a disco by night complete with pulsing beats and flashing lights. What’s not to love about Kolkata’s Hammer at The Myx on Park Street?
Formerly known as Over The Top at The Myx Bar and Kitchen, this 2,000 sq ft lounge has been through a complete face-lift and reopened just in time for the new decade celebrations last month. Offering stunning views of the city, and with chequered floor, a wall of plants, and rustic wooden furniture, Hammer has the feel of a roof-top garden. The sunny spot is the perfect for relaxed brunches or sundowners as you sip on signature cocktails.
At night their retractable roof rolls back, allowing you to spend the night dancing under the stars to slick beats dropped by the in-house DJ ( Sammy S-Clef.). “After a face-lift, Hammer is more beautiful than ever. We want our guests to remember the joys of their favourite night spot and let their hair down in the presence of peppy entertainment, eclectic selection of drinks, personalised service, great food, and of course, the stunning view of the cityscape from the top floor of The Myx Bar & Kitchen, Kolkata,” said Abhishek Kajaria, owner.
Other than the decor, the menu has also had a complete overhaul under the guidance of the renowned Shaun Kenworthy who has acquired a celebrity chef status in the city. The UK born and raised chef who wears the many different hats of a restaurateur, food and restaurant consultant, and columnist says “We’ve tried to keep Hammer as food and drinking friendly as possible, given the city’s flavour-filled taste buds. We have everything for the light lunchers and late night party people. Lots of sharing plates and bowls, all the way through to some great salads, kebabs, flatbread pizzas, and late-night fillers.”
The new menu is extensive and includes everything from hand-tossed flatbread pizzas to tandoori momos and sizzlers. The famous fish-loving city will love the Ying Yang Grilled Fish with Crispy Rice Cake. Chunks of fish are first marinated in a combination of soy and Worchester sauce after which they are grilled, and tossed with vinegar and Chinese wine to create a spicy combination. They are offset perfectly by the crispy fried rice cakes that have a nutty flavour because of the sesame. Vegetarians could try their baked baby potato that is flavoured with a fiery wasabi hollandaise and topped off with parmesan. If you are looking for something to munch on while you sip your drink their crispy cheesy kathi rolls hit the spot.
They have a bunch of cocktails that are worth trying. The signature Calcutta Derby is a combination of vodka, passion fruit, lime juice, and beer. It is citrusy and refreshing. Also worth mentioning is the Caramel Kahlua which is a yummy combination of coffee, chocolate sauce, and caramel syrup laced with dark rum and served as a shot.
