American-style pizza lovers, unite! For the longest time in India now, the deep dish has been shunned in favour of the lighter, original Italian pizza. While this movement blessed us with some authentic offerings, it closed doors for those who love an indulgent pie. However, change is afoot, and ringing it in is Uno Chicago Bar & Grill, the 76-year-old American chain credited with creating the original Chicago deep dish pizza. It has opened doors in India with not one but three outlets – one each in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. We dropped in at Uno Chicago Delhi to see and taste what the fuss was about.

uno chicago delhiSet like a typical American-style neighbourhood bar, Uno Chicago Delhi channels comfort food at its best. We tried two of the deep dishes on offer – the classic Uno Cheese & Tomato is decadence defined. The two-inches thick buttery crust has ample cheese to keep you going for days, and the fresh tomato sauce is a winner (no packaged or pre-made sauce synonymous with franchises here). Despite being filling, it’s not easy to stop at one slice. The Farmer’s Market deep dish was the second, with basil pesto as the base sauce. As loaded as the dough are the toppings on this one – eggplant, feta, spinach, caramalised red onions, tomatoes, and parmesan. The fact that the pizzas are preservatives-free and with fresh ingredients goes a long way in hearty dishes such as these.

Other offerings include the Boneless Chicken Bites, a must-try for fried chicken lovers, with its golden crispy layer leading to succulent chicken pops. The Onion Rings were done nicely, though the ‘masala’ on top could be lesser, as it prevented the fried onion flavour to come through. The Parmesan Mozzarella Sticks are a cheesy delight. Another not-to-be-missed dish is the Chicken Spinoccoli Pasta, a bed of penne pesto pasta and tomato sauce topped with chicken fillet, which is filled with mozzarella, feta, broccoli, garlic & basil, tomatoes, and spinach. The fillet alone is reason enough to try this one. The Spinach & Artichoke Dip is loaded with cheese, and don’t let the name turn you off – it’s a delight.

The surprise here were the mocktails. The Pina Colada is done perfectly, and the rich coconut-pineapple flavours rival the food. And the Berry Berry Palmer is a refreshing cooler, with hints of strawberry and raspberry mixed with tea. With feel-good food that hits the spot, Uno Chicago Delhi deserves the trek when you’re looking to do away with calorie counts and simply enjoy a meal that leaves you smiling.
