Ahead of the Auto Expo 2020, Czech auto-powerhouse ŠKODA unveils their the next cornerstone SUV after Škoda Kodiaq. Dubbed as the Vision IN concept, the 115-year old carmaker also stated that the new mid-range SUV will be focused strictly towards Indian streets.

Being under the Volkswagen group, ŠKODA comes under their next big cross-platform endeavour, the MQB A0-IN platform. If you’re wondering what this is, we don’t blame you. It’s extremely technical. But to put briefly, almost every vehicle from the VW Group that is transverse-front-engined and bigger than a VW Up will eventually be based on the MQB parts matrix. MQB stands for Modularer Querbaukasten or modular transversal toolkit. This allows the brands to piece together elements from multiple models and from other brands into one hybrid silhouette.

Back to ŠKODA’s spotlight SUV, the Vision IN concept’s exterior meets the caliber of high end luxe SUVs. The massive grille and the use of partially-illuminated crystalline gives it the futuristic appeal it needs to stand as a flagship.  Added to the mix is a shift-by-wire technology. The gear selector is no longer connected to the 7-speed DSG mechanically. Instead, it relays which gear has been chosen electronically.

In terms of numbers and power, 1.5-litre TSI petrol motor will pump out close to 150-horsepower and 250-Nm of torque will be governed by a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Expect the pull of 0-100-kmph to take place in just 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 195-kmph, which is great for an SUV meant for city streets. It isn’t much but just enough for a powerful urban commute.

If we look around the Auto Expo 2020, we’d see that carmakers, premium and luxury, are taking a sharp right into the hybrid luxury SUV space. ŠKODA is still making a slow turn around this corner. While they did state that the Vision IN could go electric or at least hybrid by 2022, which would be a more apt space considering the current industry evolution.

In terms of price, there isn’t an official word from ŠKODA but considering the calibre of the Vision In, we’d expect it to slate in at about Rs 15,00,000 approx. The new flagship SUV will go into production by early 2021. Until then, we’re expecting tons of exciting new launches from the Auto Expo 2020.
