Synonymous with quality and comfort, Germany’s biggest shoe manufacturer Birkenstock has reached Indian shores. Birkenstock’s first India store opened at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi late January. But fret not, you don’t need to get on an international flight to get your hands on them — all their iconic products are available online too.
Birkenstock is an orthopedically-inspired footwear brand that conforms to the wearer’s feet, providing unparalleled ease while walking. Made for the ecologically conscious consumer, their longevity and durability is a better alternative to fast-fashion. Each Birkenstock takes 17 steps in the process, and it takes over 100 skilled hand movements to finish a product. While most of their products are hand-worked, a lot of them are industrial as well. Either way, they swear by the highest quality of materials in cork, natural latex, copper, brass, wool felt, and leather.
Known to provide a holistic brand experience that keeps well-being in mind, Birkenstock’s venture into India comes in the wake of their aim to grow internationally, with a focus to make India one of their top five markets in the coming years. The sixth-generation family-owned label, which functions in over 100 countries, celebrates original, minimal, and functional yet stylish footwear.
Birkenstock has planned to open multiple mono-brand retail stores in a premium brand environment at India’s top shopping locations. “It’s precisely the right time for us to enter the Indian market. A booming, brand-compatible retail environment meets a strong consumer demand for genuine quality,” says Oliver Reichert, CEO of the Birkenstock Group. Vinay Bansal, who is known for his vast experience in the international brand business in India, is taking on the role as Managing Director India and will be leading the business locally.
