“Every man should have a magnifying mirror. If you look good magnified, you are set to go,” says Tom Ford. Menswear can be a complicated affair no doubt, but even within it, paying attention to detail is a mandate for modern dressing because even the simplest elements can be impactful. A sharply tailored white shirt and a minimal, luxurious timepiece can effortlessly make a bold style statement.
Riaan George agrees. Amongst one of India’s top luxury influencers, George’s Urbaneye by Riaan George chronicles the latest in menswear, grooming, travel, and aviation. He has been writing on menswear for nearly 15 years, and believes that simple elegance and attention to detail plays a vital role in modern-day dressing. “My personal style is very classic. But every now and then I like to add a touch of fun. It could be an element on my sleeve or cuff, or an accessory or a pair of bright pants,” says George. “Just one standout element in a simple and classic sartorial element. I am also very inclined towards nautical aesthetics – I love the beach life and the nautical vibe.”
Accessorising, naturally, is key. Style isn’t always about being on-brand; sartorial excellence can be achieved by balancing elegance with details – George’s personal style revolves around this principle. “Indian men strive to do too much in one look. They seem very brand-heavy and mismatched as far as pattern mixing is concerned. One should just tone it down and keep it simple, and avoid loud details.”
In this video, he tells Lifestyle Asia about the dos and don’ts of everyday accessorising, and how some of menswear’s most understated elements can make the strongest statement.
