If you’re triggered by Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat’s misogynistic comments on #RippedJeans then here are our recommendations to make a statement in.
A few days ago, Uttarakhand’s newly-appointed chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat narrated an anecdote at a workshop criticising the attire of an unnamed woman he met on flight. The honourable CM shared that the woman ran an NGO, was a mother of two children and wore ripped jeans, boots and several bracelets on her arm. Speaking at a workshop organised by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, he condemned her attire as inappropriate and questioned the values she would pass onto her children. He further chastised Indians to be ‘running towards nudity’ while the west is covering up and following yoga.
These outrageous generalisations by the honourable Chief Minister has led to a flurry of tweets, posts and protests against moral policing with #RippedJeansTwitter trending. Women all across posted pictures wearing #RippedJeans with quotes like ‘Ripped jeans are better than ripped mindsets’. Meanwhile, influencers turned misogynistic comments into memes, case in point Dolly Singh’s hilarious video ‘Five Ways To Wear Ripped Jeans’ –
