No longer something you shrug on just to keep cosy or warm during the winter months — the padded duvet coat has become something of a hot fashion topic in recent seasons. Earlier this year, high-end Italian skiwear brand Moncler announced that it would be taking its signature padded jacket one step further for the Fall/Winter 18 season by introducing the Moncler Genius project — an initiative involving a stellar list of eight creative figures showcasing their distinct takes on the Moncler vision.
Starting from June, Moncler has been unveiling one to two limited edition collections from Moncler Genius every month, including the creations of Japanese designer and influencer Hiroshi Fujiwara, as well as up-and-coming London designers Craig Green and Simone Rocha. This October, Moncler brings us the seventh of eight instalments in perhaps its most highly anticipated Moncler Genius capsule collection yet: that from the brilliant mind of Valentino creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli.
As seen in the newly released campaign images, purity is the key concept throughout the collection designed by the artistic director. Piccioli has created graphic shapes that are as mysterious and abstract as they are futuristic. His ‘Medieval Madonnas’ seen through space-age lenses merge form with essence, evoking the aesthetics of the Victorian era. A-line silhouettes ooze a couture feel while keeping the sense of functionality which is at the very core of Moncler. The collection covers a wide range of products; for instance, flared zip-up hooded maxi capes are worn over full-length A-line skirts and dresses. The Madonna looks are completed with padded duvet spats and elbow-length gloves.
Adding to the high-impact graphic looks is an assortment of contrasting, saturated colours. Coats come in a rainbow palette of amethyst, imperial yellow, bright green, orange, red and cherry red, as well as neutral tones of ivory and black. As suggested by Pierpaolo, the hues are meant to be mixed rather than matched from head-to-toe. To highlight the sense of angelic spirituality, the fashion director has also worked with monk and artist Sidival Fila, who created the abstract and angelic canvases for the installation and visual.
From the collections, it’s evident that Moncler continues to explore the infinite possibilities of the house’s unique fashion identity, adopting a special mix of pieces with autonomous, distinctive meanings. The eight creative figures have also been tapped by the outerwear brand to continue designing Moncler Genius collections for Spring 2019. For sartorial enthusiasts, we’ll just have to wait and see how their creations will take the next season by storm.
