With sustainability being the hot topic on fashion’s radar, Louis Vuitton’s men’s artistic director, Virgil Abloh, gives a new lease of life to the Louis Vuitton upcycled sneakers collection that debuted in SS ’19.

Back in 2018, when Virgil Abloh joined the ranks at Louis Vuitton as the men’s artistic director, his maiden collection for the brand consisted of high top sneakers and classic trainers that saw much popularity. Fast forward to 2021, he has released a new version of the LV Trainer for SS ’21 that are upcycled versions of the original 2019 trainers. Designed to further extend the sustainability of Louis Vuitton products, Virgil Abloh’s ‘upcycling ideology’ of sustainability, reuse, and recycling is in sync with the wave of growing fashion consciousness.

Disassembled and then transformed, the new LV trainers are made from the pre-existing 2019 ones, yet stand out with their use of calfskin and suede along with some playful tie-and-dye coloured laces. Designed at Louis Vuitton’s dedicated shoe workshop in Fiesso d’Artico, the shoes come with a set of assembly instructions (about centering, cutting, and hand-applying the leather) and excess stitching threads (that can be cut), almost like a DIY for buyers to customise their own sneakers.

The low-top version is available in five brightly coloured shades — pink, red, yellow, blue and green — along with a padded collar, ‘LV Upcycling’ edged on the back and the signature logo plus monogram flowers on the sole. An iridescent tag takes form on the right shoe, featuring Virgil Abloh’s signature style, an embossed LV logo.

As Kanye West’s ex-creative director and founder of luxe streetwear label OFF-WHITE, American designer, DJ, and stylist Virgil Abloh’s street cred ranks high. That, paired with Louis Vuitton’s eye for craftsmanship, makes these sneaker creations a coveted piece for LV patrons.
