For their last SS ’19 show for Ferragamo, designers Paul Andrew and Guillaume Meilland fused the concepts of utilitarian workwear and luxury. There were experiments with leather, and the introduction of a number of new effortlessly elegant silhouettes that summed up the new narrative both the designers are trying to build at the brand.
Imagine linens and organzas juxtaposed with precious skins, and a use of colours like emerald, Caribbean blue, violet, burnt orange, and flame red. There was inexplicable ease and a sense of urbane sophistication in every piece. Stella Tennant opened the show in a jewel-toned handkerchief hemmed skirt, and a flurry of models followed in Bermuda shorts, mesh-encased foulard dresses, and classic buttoned-down shirts. The men wore trousers with languid silhouettes, quilted vests, impeccably tailored blazers, and long coats. One might think the show was all about apparel. But the real play was the footwear.
The iconic Vara was reimagined – the bow was upgraded from grosgrain to moulded metal. The latest version of knee-high boots, raised sandals and men’s rubber and rope-soled desert boots came together in handwoven leather.
Meilland ensured that he created a luxury carryall bag for men – Dynamo, an exquisitely crafted bag in handwoven leather made its runway debut.
