Weekly Obsessions: Chloé’s Hong Kong exclusive Roy Day bag, Grand Seiko’s elegant dress watch and more

Chloé has just opened up a brand new boutique at the Elements mall; to celebrate, the brand has launched a ‘Roy Day’ bag (HK$18,900) exclusive to Hong Kong. The ‘Roy’ family is amongst the first bag creations designed by Natacha Ramsay-Levi following her appointment as Chloé’s creative director just last year, and the ‘Roy Day’ features multiple compartments and two shoulder straps to maximise its practically as the ultimate everyday bag. I love this version for the geometric pattern that’s been especially woven (using a unique technique that’s called “punto tappet”) and shaved, resulting in a fluffy texture I imagine I won’t be able to resist rubbing my hands all over whenever I get the chance to! —Cindie Chan, Style Editor

Plaids for fall? Yes please. While this heritage pattern has always been associated with the cooler season, I’ve noticed that, over the past few weeks, I’ve been repeatedly pouring over all these unexpected contemporary design variations that I’ve been seeing in stores. In addition to the hybrid designs that proved to be very popular amongst street style stars during the recent Fashion Week SS19, this off-shoulder blazer top by Monse (HK$13,700 from Shopbop) is also a current favourite of mine. I love the stylish adaptation of the classic print on a modern day silhouette, and the combination of off-the-shoulder design with asymmetric hem and belted waist is almost guaranteed to flatter any figure tremendously. —CC

While the horological zeitgeist continues to favour conspicuous complications (seriously how many Cosmograph Daytonas do we have to fawn over before it all becomes a bit inane?) — I’ve always loved the simplicity of an elegant dress watch. Inherently less cluttered than tool or sport models, a competent time-and-date combo must demonstrate its excellence using a much smaller repertoire of design elements. Grand Seiko make this kind of restraint look effortless; as is evident from the premium watchmaker’s SBGH263 release (approx. HK$48,547). Naturally, Grand Seiko have used this as a medium for exploration of uniquely Japanese metiers d’art; with the ensuing dial replicating the sumptuous depth and texture of Shironeri silk to great effect. This particular timepiece is no slouch on the technical front either — powered by Grand Seiko’s signature calibre 9S85, a uniquely precise movement which vibrates at the rapid pace of 10 beats per second. —Randy Lai, Staff Writer

Released just over the course of the last two weeks, Rihanna’s fave liquid lip — prized for its universal ability to flatter any skintone — just got a whole new family, with not just one but four new shades (HK$190 each). What’s not to love? Adding onto the best-selling classic red “Uncensored” is “Unveil”, a luxurious milk chocolate brown; “Uncuffed”, a not-so-innocent rosy mauve; “Unbutton”, a sultry peachy nude; and “Uninvited”, an authoritative-looking, Prometheus-esque jet black, encased in a sleek black packaging (just in time for Halloween?). Ticking the boxes for quality, weightlessness, easy application and durability, it’s no surprise these were already sold out during Sephora’s VIP sale over the weekend. I love a good face mask, especially the kind that you can layer lavishly onto your skin and then leave to work its magic (there’s a special time for sheet masks for me, and that’s reserved for the plane). Antipodes can be said to be a Kiwi national treasure, serving up natural concoctions made from New Zealand’s most potent homegrown ingredients for skincare. This brightening mud mask (HK$299) is perfect for giving dull, congested skin a detox using mineral-rich volcanic mud, binding to the excess oils in your pores and carrying away dirt with your rinse. It also anti-oxidises with Vinanza grapes and kiwis, minimising the appearance of freckles and pigmentation. After rinsing off, you feel clean, but your skin doesn’t feel dry and out of balance. Your skin appears brighter and smoother with all the dead skin and dullness sloughed off, making for a worthwhile mid-week pick-me-up. —EL
