After the second World War, the Japanese had a tough time reconstructing their country, and took them nearly 20 years to get back on their feet. Driven by a wish for emancipation, the younger generation from the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ started an underground urban culture, which involved car customisation and a fascination for smaller but fast, over-engineered sports cars. At its forefront was the Nissan Skyline GT-R.
50 years later, it’s no surprise that this urban street cult and its models are revered in the motoring industry. Case in point is fellow Japanese watchmaker Seiko, which has acknowledged the iconic carmaker with watches dedicated to it. Now, in the third and final installment of their Spring Drive line, Grand Seiko is commemorating 50 years of the Nissan GT-R alongside 2o years of the Spring Drive movement.
The GT-R 50th Anniversary Spring Drive Chronograph GMT is a limited of 200 pieces, and as Hiroshi Tamura, Nissan’s chief product specialist says, “GT-R and the Grand Seiko watch were made in honour of Japan”. “It’s engineering heritage. We’re not made to be sexy.”
The timepiece is based on Grand Seiko’s new Spring Drive Sport Collection, which was unveiled at Baselworld 2019. With a penchant for heavy detailing and extreme watchmaking craftsmanship, the timepiece boasts a GMT hand and 12-hour chronograph.
The timepiece is powered by Grand Sieko’s exquisite 9R96 calibre, a hybrid movement that offers the beauty and perpetuity of an automatic calibre, and the precision of a quartz regulator. The new calibre boasts a 72-hours power reserve as it utilises an exclusive speed control mechanism, incorporating an IC, an electronic brake and a quartz crystal.
The classic Spring Drive design silhouettes have been cased in black titanium and ceramic with a contrasting white dial. The tinge of Bayside Blue detailing is a nod to the current GT-R’s signature hue.
The Grand Seiko Spring Drive Chronograph Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary ref. SBGC229 will be available from June 2019 at select Grand Seiko and Seiko boutiques, and selected retail partners across the world.
