Finally winter and the unseasonal hailstorms are over. The sun is peeking through the clouds and spring is in the air, which, along with other things, is a beacon for making those vacation reservations. Warmer temperatures bring with themselves trips to the evergreen destination, Europe, and it is likely that if not the entire holiday, at least a part of it is spent in this continent. And there’s one destination that needs to be on your itinerary — Outletcity Metzingen, Germany. Visiting Europe and not indulging in shopping is blasphemy, and helping us sidestep that sin is this shopping haven. A one-stop-shop for the fashion overhaul of the season, here’s why we’re loving it.
When a mall’s history dates back almost 200 years, and to the founders of Hugo Boss, one knows they’re in good hands. From being a textile factory in 1820, to establishing Hugo Boss in 1923, to becoming home to over 85 luxury outlet stores today, Outletcity Metzingen carries a history few can boast of. Think Ermenegildo Zegna, Bottega Veneta, Polo Ralph Lauren, Gucci, Escada, Tory Burch, Jimmy Choo, and many more in one exclusive shopping destination. Adding to their existing roster, Outletcity will be taking the brands they host to over 100 this Spring, as they open 16 new stores this April 5. As Versace, Philipp Plein, Salvatore Ferragamo, Karl Lagerfeld, Breitling, Patricia Pepe, Vilebrequin, Gant and more open doors, the welcome will be accompanied by a special midnight shopping event and other outstanding specials, making a visit to the mall an absolute delight.
Just 30 kilometres south of Stuttgart, it is easily accessible through road, train, with Outletcity’s shuttle services taking about 30 minutes to reach the mall. What we’re loving is the luxe retail therapy experience. Their midnight shopping days have the stores open for an extra four hours, allowing one to indulge for 14 straight hours, from 10 am to 12 am. Special children’s daycare camps help create a seamless experience where one doesn’t have to worry about the little ones. For non-EU citizens the option to get on the spot tax refunds is a relief if you’re making a quick trip to Metzingen, especially from outside Germany. Taking it a notch higher are the personal shopping assistants available for hire, helping one pick the perfect styles for themselves as well as easing out the process. When looking to take a break, try one of the four different eateries like Italian, German bakes, paninis, and burgers and fries. The glass facade and large terrace at the Italian Olio e Pane make it a favourite.
We suggest scheduling in a weekend trip to Metzingen to soak in the experience. Other than Stuttgart, it’s close to other popular holiday cities too — less than two hours from Zurich, Frankfurt, and Munich. Central to several oft-visited destinations, Outletcity makes for an ideal shopping hop away from the main city. Take your pick of 38 hotels in the proximity for your stay, with the likes of Le Meredien and Biosphere Hotel Graf Eberhard offering splendid service and mountain views. Their limousines and helicopter shuttles help you reach the mall and back in the lap of luxury, and golf clubs, hiking trails, castles, and untouched environs of the Swabian Alps biosphere help punctuate the retail therapy getaway.
A quick break, an exclusive fashion experience, an indulgent abode — Outletcity Metzingen is our travel pick of the season and has it all to top your must-visit destination list as well.
