9 Trends That Will Rule Indian Weddings In 2019

If there’s one lesson that 2018 taught us, it’s that bigger is better. We all know that Indian weddings already come with that mandate but more so now than ever, exotic destinations, unusual designers, personalised details and over-the-top ideas have created the roadmap for the future. It’s only going to get better and larger now, and as if that wasn’t enough, the next year’s trends help to really soak in these changes. So here are our biggest trends for 2019.

Unusual designers

When Sonam Kapoor stepped out in an Anuradha Vakil for her wedding, many were surprised at a choice that gave a miss to the bigger designer names. More and more brides are choosing newer, more unusual lehenga-makers, and that’s a trend that will see us through 2019.

Unique lehenga hues

Case in point: Saina Nehwal’s rich indigo velvet lehenga, which was probably the most talked-about this season. This beauty by Sabyasachi came with two dupattas, a velvet one with zardozi, and the second that was made of sheer net. 

Larger-than-life set-ups

With Isha Ambani’s wedding, the bar has been set very high and that means, the bigger, the better. The floral zardozi backdrops at her wedding spoke volumes on how one can go larger-than-life with a pandal.

Bridesmaids in style

If there was a bridal squad that was followed on Instagram, it was Priyanka Chopra’s. Her bunch of girls were all about style – from the Tiffany store party to the fun Amsterdam bar hop, not to forget the best coordinated outfits at the wedding.

Exotic locales

Lake Como became a hotspot on the Indian wedding horizon thanks to Deepika and Ranveer. India has woken up to newer destinations and newer hotels to work their wedding into – the more private and exotic, the better.

Simple ‘Phoolon Ki Chaddar’

All those fancy flowers and kaleeras and whatnot aside, ‘phoolon ki chaddars’ had become way too cluttered as an idea. Enter Priyanka, Deepika, Isha Ambani and Sonam walking in under just beautiful yards of silk.

Simple mangalsutras

Mangalsutras are simpler now. Deepika and Priyanka flaunted them with couture gowns too, and Sonam wore hers on her wrist as a bracelet. 

Personalised ideas

We loved how Priyanka took personalisation to another level with her Ralph Lauren dress and her lehenga. The red Sabyasachi lehenga had names of Nick Jonas and her parents sown into the waistband in Hindi; the Ralph Lauren had Jonas’ mother’s wedding gown sown into the dress, alongside eight special phrases embroidered onto it, including the groom’s name, her parents’ names, and the date of the wedding. She also wore matching Louboutin X Sabyasachi jhuttis.

Groom style

2018 might just be the year of the groom. From anarkali kurtas to form-fitted sherwanis to colourful floral bandhgalas and even an odd Manish Arora jacket everything’s game. We loved how Ranveer paved the way in a Manish Arora bandhgala in signature neon hues and a cat accessory on his shoulder.
