With over 145 years of history behind the brand, Shiseido was actually founded not as a traditional Japanese skincare brand but instead, a Western-style pharmacy in Japan. Its founder, Arinobu Fukuhara was a chief pharmacist in a naval hospital, when he founded this “Western-style pharmacy” out of annoyance at the available medicine in the market that time.
The first cosmetic product that Shiseido debuted was the Eudermine back in 1897, a lotion that prevented dry skin. It was particularly memorable because of its red colouring. Surprisingly, the product is still sold today but with a different formulation.
