2017 has been a good year for beauty. This is proven by multiple brand launches and collaborations that made headlines inside and outside of the beauty industry.
Kim Kardashian West capitalised on the contoured look that she is famously known for and incorporated it into her brand — KKW Beauty. H&M Beauty has also finally reached Malaysian shores after so many years with their in house makeup, skincare, body care, and hair care line.
Among many other brand and product launches, the biggest brand launch of 2017 is Fenty Beauty (no surprise there). Created by Rihanna; the brand which was also awarded Invention of the Year by Time magazine, changed the beauty industry by releasing 40 foundation shades. Many brands also followed suit, including Kylie Cosmetics that just released 30 concealer shades. 2017 may be the year of beauty but it is also the year for women of colour.
1 Extra long locks
Celebrities like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and Ariana Grande (though often in a ponytail) are seen incorporating very long hair into their looks. We can’t say for sure if the hair length is real, because extensions and hair wigs exist for a reason.
2 Glossy finish
2017 is the year we’ve discovered that gloss is not just for the lips. While we’ve never reached for the gloss since the early 2000s, this high-shine finish is seen applied on the eye lids and cheeks. This ‘wet’ look may be the ‘it’ look of spring 2017, but it will continue on to 2018. It tends to get sticky, best to abide by these rules to have sticky-free lids.
3 Bleached Dos
Selena Gomez may be the one who stole the blonde transformation spotlight during the AMAs, but the bleached trend wave has made its rounds through quite a number of celebrities. Kristen Stewart, Zoe Kravitz, both of whom are naturally brunettes showcased their newly bleached looks early this year. Karlie Kloss, who is already naturally blonde went one step further to get a platinum finish.
4 Sparkling everything
Glitter is not for the festive season anymore. It is on hair roots, face, nails, eye lids, and lips. The shimmery eyeshadow and lipsticks were contributed by beauty moguls: Pac McGrath and Fenty Beauty’s Galaxy collection. If that’s not enough, use the internet’s recent favourite app: Kira Kira, on your pictures and videos.
5 Monochromatic makeup
There’s bound to be a day when you just want your eyeshadow, cheeks, lips, and nails to look the same. This effortless makeup trend is made popular by many not just because it looks nice but also time-saving. Makeup artist, Katie Jane Hughes said “Even though you’re using one kind of shade, it will read slightly different on different places on your face, which is good.”
