The news of luxury fashion giants delving in the world of makeup may be nothing new but when it’s a large collection like a 58-shade lipstick line, we can’t help but dig deeper. Just over the weekend, Gucci relaunched their beauty line under the creative direction of Alessandro Michele. 58 shades for an initial launch is a lot (in our opinion) — and here we are thinking that Fenty Beauty 40-shade foundation shades launch was already big a one.
Why lipsticks? “Lipstick is the most beautiful object you can find inside a handbag. It is the most fascinating because it has always had a beautiful scent — we made Gucci lipsticks perfumed with violet. Lipstick is a playful object because it recalls crayons that children colour with. Lipstick also symbolises the world of cinema, and all the famous lips from Hollywood,” he told WWD.
There are three finishes in the collection: Rouge à Lèvres Satin, a satin finish; Rouge à Lèvres Voile, a sheer finish; and Baume à Lèvres, a translucent lip balm. With a collection this big, diversity is expected and they delivered. There is definitely a distinct variant, anything between shocking pinks to neutral nudes. 25* Goldie Red is the star of the entire collection, which Thomas de Kluyver, Gucci Beauty’s Global Makeup Artist, described as “not too blue, not too orange”. It was inspired by Michele’s love for red and his lucky number.
Vintage glamour is also evident in its conceptualisation. Names were taken from some of Hollywood’s most famous lips and the use of gold and Art Deco were spotted on the designs.
