Runway report: All the SS17 beauty trends you need to know

We’re in the thick of Spring/Summer 2017 fashion weeks — the crucial period where the sartorial gods that be deem what governs the wardrobe of the fashion-conscious for next year’s sweatier weather. At the moment, we’ve seen velvet, terry cloth robes, souvenir jackets (sukajan) and hoodies take centre stage, marking SS17 as a hot (literally and figuratively) season.

Aside from style, fashion week sets the pace for what’s to be big in beauty. Wearing Snapchat filters and pressed flower petals à la Desigual and Preen may not be the most practical, but the other SS17 beauty trends are veering towards wearability instead of screaming avant-garde fashun.

Here are the trends set to dominate the beauty market next year:

1
Neon lips

Seen at: Cushnie et Ochs, Mary Katrantzou, Jason Wu, Versus Versace and more.

AW16 may be the season of dark lips, but the imminent spring beckons for neon orange, pink and red lips to lead the way.

2
Smudgy kohl eyes

Seen at: Baja East, Prabal Gurung, Altuzarra, Rag & Bone and more.

A number of runways saw the revival of the 90s makeup staple — closely lined eyes and waterlines smudged to grunge-chic effect. Put your everyday smoky eye away, and try this daring look on for size.

3
Fresh skin

Seen at: Yeezy, Marchesa, Rodarte, JW Anderson and more.

The emergence of the oxymoronic “no-makeup makeup look” took over many runways this season. Skin was kept fresh and dewy, with a hint of blush, bronzer and little else. This trend spells great news for mornings when you’re rushing to work.

4
Sixties siren eyeshadow

Seen at: Anna Sui, Tadashi Shoji, and Pamella Roland

If you’re not particularly skilled with eyeshadows, embrace these ’60s-inspired eye looks. All you need is red, burgundy, or soft pink eyeshadow smoked all over your lids and lower lashline, and you’re good to go.

5
Beach blonde

Seen at: Alexander Wang, Topshop Unique, JÉRÔME and more.

Fashion week has declared your raggedy post-shower hairstyle a trend, particularly if it’s bleached blonde, and erring on the side of being dehydrated. It’s time to bust out the salt texturising spray.

6
Flared brows

Seen at: Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Kors, Narcisco Rodriguez and more.

Instagram’s “fleeky” brows saw no place on the fashion week runways. Makeup artists embraced the natural length of the models’ brows, flaring them upwards with brow gel to thicken and add depth to the face.
