These are the best Lunar New Year beauty collections we’ve seen thus far

Just when you thought the onslaught of holiday collections were over, we now present to you the best Lunar New Year beauty collections.

The holidays are a big thing in the Western world — beauty brands globally churn out gorgeous, limited-edition holiday collections that are perfect for gifting. Even if you don’t want to gift them, they’re nice collectables to add to your collection. But in recent years, we’ve seen more brands coming out with their own Lunar New Year limited-edition pieces as well, showing that this celebration is garnering equal amounts of attention. Not that we’re complaining.

2021 marks the Year of the Ox, so you will see this zodiac making its debut on some of the designs. In the Chinese zodiac, the ox is a symbol of diligence, persistence, and honesty — attributes that we can certainly incorporate in 2021. Aside from the ox, most of these Lunar New Year beauty collections will also see the colour red in its design. After all, red is the ultimate symbol of the Lunar New Year.

Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum CNY Limited Edition

One of Sulwhasoo’s best-selling serums, the First Care Activating Serum is getting a Chinese New Year (CNY) makeover. The signature bottle is dressed in a sleek and glossy red hue, symbolising love, wealth, and prosperity for the new year. The box that the bottle comes in also has its own design — love motifs inspired by the traditional Korean patchwork quilt, known as ‘jogakbo’. The jogakbo is known to bring good luck, happiness, and good health. We could use a lot of that this year.

For those who have yet to experience the First Care Activating Serum, this is the first serum you should use in your skincare routine, as it preps the skin for better absorption and efficacy of the subsequent products used. The serum also works as an anti-ageing boosting serum, capable of awakening skin cells that remain dormant deep under the layers of your skin.

The Sulwhasoo First Care Activating Serum CNY Limited Edition is only available at selected Sulwhasoo stores at RM565

M.A.C Moon Masterpiece

Instead of using red and the Ox to symbolise its Lunar New Year collection, M.A.C is instead embracing oriental motifs. The ‘Moon Masterpiece’ collection is reminiscent of Andy Warhol’s pop-art style featuring an elegant goldfish. Within the collection you’ll find a selection of popular products from the makeup brand including the Eye Shadow X 9: Sea of Plenty (RM225) palette, Extra Dimension Skinfinish (RM169) highlighter, Powder Blush Duo (RM135), Versicolour Varnish Cream Lip Stain (RM114), and the new favourite Powder Kiss (RM96) lipstick. The standout product in the collection definitely goes to the Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Double-Gleam, a popular shade of iridescent beige and silver with a fish embossed on the powder.

The M.A.C Moon Masterpiece collection is available at selected M.A.C stores and online

Supergoop! Limited Edition Unseen Sunscreen Jumbo SPF 40

For comparison, a regular-sized version of the Unseen Sunscreen is 50ml; this one is 74ml.
