On 15 February, Shiseido Professional’s Beauty Innovator Award 2016/17 returned for the fourth year running in Malaysia. Its 2017 edition marked the first time Singapore and Malaysia celebrated the awards ceremony together. Themed “Artistry of Inspiring Creativity”, it was by so far the largest cross-cultural hair design photo competition of its kind.
This year, the Beauty Innovator Award launched a new category called Colour Creation, which comprised hairstyles, makeup, costume and photography. Kevin Neo of Hair Vintage salon in Singapore took home the title of Total Creation Grand Prix, with his colourful “Fighting Fish” look. Inspired by a hair cut technique known as “fan cutting”, the hair was spread out evenly to resemble a fish’s tail.
Representing Malaysia, Dicksum Low from A Cut Above won the same award with his creation “Nacre”, which featured a crystalline substance that created an iridescent look.
The Beauty Innovator Award ended with a show by the regional Beauty Creative Team, which showcased a variety of contemporary, tribal-inspired looks.
