Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a melting pot of food and culture, that much is confirmed. There is always something new happening every month and October is no different. This month’s best dishes include the likes of Altitude at Banyan Tree, Babe by Jeff Ramsey, and of course KL’s very own Bref by Darren Chin.
Almost every other day there’s something new happening around the Klang Valley, with the latest being Saint-Pierre KL, Malaysia’s first Michelin-starred dining restaurant. The bar scene in KL is not to be overlooked either as there seems to be a new bar popping up every other month.
What’s great about this month’s best dishes is that all three span across different cuisines. Ultimately, it depends on what you would prefer to have on the day. Altitude at Banyan Tree focuses more on its wine pairings while Babe by Jeff Ramsey is a limited-time-only menu in conjunction with Maison Perrier-Jouët champagne.
Altitude at Banyan Tree
The dish: This new dinner menu by Altitude at Banyan Tree focuses on a specific selection of dishes that are paired with its large selection of wines, handpicked by its very own sommelier. The dish in question is the Goulbum Valley smoked beef sirloin with a side of sautéed organic garden vegetables. In the sequence of meat, vegetable and mash; savour the beautifully cooked protein that simply melts in the mouth. Vegetables are cooked al dente, giving a nice crunch at the end of every bite. The truffled mash complements the meal so well, providing a well-rounded and complete dish that would satisfy a dinner appetite. Top it all off with the 2016 Teusner “Gentleman” Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia. It provides a subtle sweet aftertaste with sharp notes in the between.
The place: Altitude is located on the 53rd floor of Banyan Tree, which is also home to Vertigo, the tallest rooftop bar in KL. Bask in the city skyline while enjoying a nice glass of wine (or two) and take in the view that is unmatched anywhere else around town.

Bref by Darren Chin
The dish: A staple dish in its Autumn/Winter 2018 menu, this seasonal menu focuses on comfort food for the soul with a French twist to it. With a range of antipasti, entrées, mains, and pastas to look forward to, Bref delights itself on keeping things minimal while letting its food do the talking. One dish in particular that demands attention is the fresh egg Tagliatelle carbonara with Hokkaido scallops. Light and balanced in flavour, it is one dish worth sampling if you’re ever planning on heading over to Bref.
The place: Meant to be chef Darren Chin’s home away from home, Bref breathes new life into the local dining scene in Kuala Lumpur. Being of the first breakthrough local chefs to introduce a modern interpretation into French cuisine, Bref places emphasis towards the simplicity of things and keeping this casual.

Babe by Jeff Ramsey
The dish: Babe by Jeff Ramsey is the Michelin-starred chef’s way of creating a new and exciting dining experience for its patrons. Partnering up with Maison Perrier-Jouët champagne, the ‘Art of the Wild’ dinner series menu will be available from 26 October to 11 November with many different champagne pairings for its 9-course meal. With the entire theme centred around the playfulness that is Babe, its “Steak” sandwich is envisioned as such with a deconstructed sandwich featuring braised beef tongue, gherkin, and wagyu tartare. What followed is an amalgamation of flavours that explode on your taste buds from the first bite. This goes well with the Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut, leaving a slightly sweet and sharp aftertaste on one’s palate.
The place: Michelin-starred chef Jeff Ramsey brought his exploits to our shores in 2016 with Babe by Jeff Ramsey at Work@Clearwater. Labelled as a gastro restaurant with a fun dining experience, Babe aims to excite and delight with its ever-changing playful menu.
