The Mid-Autumn Festival is fast approaching, and it’s time again for us to order those special, elegant mooncakes that come in gorgeous boxes (that we love to reuse as decorative containers). The main attraction is still the mooncakes themselves, of course. This year, we see the famous durian flavour remaining on most mooncake menus while the luxurious champagne mooncakes by The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur are back by popular demand. Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur
Forever looking for more reasons to eat chocolate (not that we need any), we’re in love with Mandarin Oriental KL’s chocolate mooncakes selection, particularly the Raspberry Ganache with Lime Crunch. The other two chocolate mooncake flavours are Fruity Dark Chocolate with Orange, and Pecan with Macadamia Milk Chocolate. A few other special flavours to try are the Dragon Fruit Lotus Paste, and Durian with Melon Seed. There’s also mini snow skin mooncakes filled with Pandan and Cheese, and Custard and Oats, if those tickle your fancy.
Prices start at RM20 per piece for the mini mooncakes, while the medium chocolate mooncakes are RM33 each.

Nobu Kuala Lumpur
For the first time ever, Nobu is creating mooncakes available exclusively at Nobu Kuala Lumpur. Choose to enjoy their green tea, red bean, sesame or fruit and nuts fillings in traditionally-baked pastry or snow skin interpretations. The mooncakes are presented in 180g pairs enclosed in a luxurious, fine reusable lacquer box with gold inlay and maple leaf motif.
Each oven-baked mooncake is priced at RM95 nett while the snow skin choices are RM 105 nett per unit. Nobu is accepting mooncake orders for pick-up from now until 15 September 2016.

This year we’re excited to get our hands on Westin’s Bloom Mooncake gift box — it has a potting container on top where you can set up the DIY terrarium kit that comes with it. Back to the mooncakes themselves, there are eight flavours to choose from including Lotus Paste with Single yolk, Pure Red Bean Paste, and Pandan Lotus Paste. There are low sugar varieties for the Plain White Lotus Paste and Plain White Lotus with Single Yolk flavours.
All the mooncakes are of baked skin variety, and come in boxes of two at RM75 nett or four at RM110 nett.

Have fun choosing between Shangri-la Hotel, Kuala Lumpur’s 12 flavours this year that includes five traditional, five new and two signature flavours (or take one of each for good measure). The five new flavours include Black Sesame Seed Paste Single Yolk and Mini Ping Pei Avocado Paste while the two signature flavours are Mini Ping Pei Durian and Mini Ping Pei with Bird’s Nest.

Presented in pretty blue or red tiffin boxes, Hilton KL’s flavour line-up this year includes the signature Imperial by Chynna (the Chinese restaurant in Hilton KL) — gold-dusted mooncakes filled with Valrhona chocolate and figs — and Heavenly Gold snow skin mooncake filled with Musang King durian. Muslim friends will be happy to know that the baked skin mooncakes are halal-certified and has flavours such as Lotus Paste, Pandan Paste or traditional-style baked five nuts.
Head to the Mooncake counter at the hotel lobby or Chynna on level 2 and choose four mooncakes for each Tiffin Red or Blue Box, priced at RM118 nett.

Celestial Court of Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur keeps things simple and authentic this year with traditional red boxes and eight mooncake flavours to choose from. There are four baked skin filling choices with the likes of Pure Lotus Paste Single Yolk with Dried Longan and Melon Seed, and Low-sugar Osmanthus Wolfberry White Lotus and Black Sesame. The other four snow skin flavours include Salted Caramel Golden Custard and Azuki Bean and Teh Tarik flavoured Yam Paste with Macademia Nuts.

Li Yen, The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur
Li Yen Chinese restaurant in The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur is the place to go if you like your mooncakes with a tinge of naughty. The award-winning restaurant is debuting its exclusive Snow Skin Cream Cheese with Port Wine mooncake while the Moët & Chandon Champagne mooncake flavours are back by popular demand. Created by Chef Leong Kwai Hong, the exquisite Champagne mooncakes retain a traditional element where essence of Champagne is infused into smooth lotus paste which is then wrapped in a snow skin that’s also bears the sparkling flavour. There are also traditional baked mooncakes with flavours like Red Bean Paste with Single Yolk and the savoury Li Yen Kam Tui that’s filled with delicious nuts and Chinese ham.

He recommends to try the Red Prawn Durian and Roselle snow skin with Tangerine Lotus Cheese Paste if you haven’t. The other truly innovative flavours include Scarlet Baked Snow Skin with Pandan, Salted Bean Paste and Beetroot, Bamboo Charcoal with Assorted Nuts, and Coconut Milk Snow Skin with Teow Chew Yam Shrimp and Single Yolk.
