The bar scene in Kuala Lumpur has flourished in recent years, with creative concepts, world class bartenders and hip venues popping up in every corner of this bustling city. Everyone has their staple watering holes that they all know and love, but we decided to scout out some of the newest drinking spots in the city that you should try.
There is no shortage of speakeasy bars these days, but we’re especially loving the swanky CRIME Cocktail Bar in TREC KL — which easily calls to mind The Godfather (1972) and the ’20s Prohibition Era — and the medieval-inspired AD Bar in Bangsar. These bars take a bit of effort to find, but you’ll be rewarded with a unique night out. For something a little more casual, head over to JungleBird, a tiki-themed cocktail bar that guarantees the best in rum, and heaps of fun.
If cocktails and hidden bars aren’t your thing, we’ve found a great spot to catch up over a few glasses of reds, whites and bubblies. Wine Connection in TREC is the largest wine shop in Kuala Lumpur, and stocks up a wide variety that will make you feel like a kid in a candy shop. To get you started on your next bar hop, we’ve put together a guide to 4 bars worth visiting.
Good luck finding this speakeasy, where you’ll require a secret code to enter (Pro tip: Go to the oysters). CRIME looks like it’s been transported from the Prohibition Era, with leather couches, portraits of infamous mob bosses and swing music on rotation. Cocktails follow suit, with a highlight being the cheekily named Silk Road, a mix of bacon fat-infused whiskey with lemon juice and balsamic vinegar.

Rum is the name of the game here at JungleBird, a casual, tropical-themed cocktail bar nestled in the heart of Damansara Heights. Fun fact: The Jungle Bird cocktail is rumoured to have been created in the late 1970s at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur. Decked out in handcrafted rattan furnishings and palm leaf motifs, this laid-back joint boasts a stellar range of tipples.

Set in the medieval era, this cosy, rustic tavern is hidden behind a curious painting and artificial wall on Jalan Telawi. Cocktails are every bit outlandish and magical, with whimsical names such as “Grumpy Giant” or “Yeti Cup”. Don’t miss out on Fairy’s Tears, which is an elegant sparkling wine concoction topped off with a shot of Blue Pea Flower.
