Innovation is doing new things.” It is perhaps these two aspects that The Macallan had, which constantly pushes them to create new and amazing things. Other than the brand’s many limited edition whiskies, the opening of their new distillery in Speyside also has proven that despite being an old name in the business, The Macallan is still willing to try new things.

Barely a year after the release of the Edition No. 3, The Macallan is releasing yet another Edition series: The Macallan Edition No. 4. This time around, master distiller Nick Savage chooses to focus on the weight and structure of the whisky, inspired by the recently-opened Speyside distillery.

The Edition series has always focused on the brand’s commitment to wood — specifically, the various types of casks used to age the whisky. In Edition No. 1 and No. 2, we have seen how the brand highlights the cask influences the taste and flavour of the whiskies. Edition No. 3 witnesses a shift of focus towards aroma and even a collaboration with perfumer Roja Dove to create a limited-edition whisky that tastes as fragrant as it is flavourful.

The Macallan Edition No. 4 focuses on the “structure” of whisky, going back to the basics of the whisky-making process. A great amount of attention to detail goes in the oak cask selection, as they each impart different influences to the whisky. For the Edition No. 4, these casks are used: European and American oak refill butts and hogsheads, and also butts, puncheons and hogsheads from Vasmya, Diego Martin, Jose y Miguel Martin and Tevasa. It’s bewildering, but each of these casks plays a role in showing off their individual qualities within the whisky.

Despite the uses of several casks, the whisky stays true to the brand’s iconic Sherry-seasoned oak cask and the aroma it imparts. Yet, the flavour profile is a modern one — a nod towards the innovative new distillery in Speyside. “This is a truly spectacular single malt, delivering a rounded honey and sweet toffee aroma and an intense burst of nutmeg with wood spices on the palate,” explains Savage. “A combination of carefully selected sherry-seasoned oak casks brings out unique refreshing qualities and delivers an unforgettable whisky experience.”
